  • Bit of a nugget

  • Specs look ok but not brilliant. For $49 though it is a red hot bang for the buck deal.

  • Does the ZTE run android, if so what software ?
I'm trying to find something cheap that has access to the play store.
    Steve

    • Appears to be Android 5.1 (Lollipop)

    • Any android device running android has access to google play.

  • Post Office shops also has a Telstra Slim Plus (introductory offer) for $49. States $79 after promotion ends.
Same phone as in Coles and available until 26th June.

is there a code to unlock by any chance?

  • Saw one of these in Coles today. Actually just the box. Says "FWVGA" (854 x 480) so no its not 720p. Also this seems fit more closely to ZTE L5 (NON plus version), meaning no LTE. Not sure if its a good deal. Only thing is it has a large'ish 5" screen.

Don't think you'd want a 720p dual core phone. It's not even using A53 cores. With phones this cheap they tend to be built to a price and cut corners where they can.

  • Purchased this phone for the wife and had it unlocked but it's not connecting to the carrier's data? Any ideas?

    • Is there a relatively cheap unlock for this on ebay or elsewhere?

      • yep had it unlocked and went to use a optus sim but wont let me connect to data. Noticed that this phone is only WCDMA capable.

        • A bit of a novice here, are you saying after you had the phone unlocked from Telstra and then put in a Optus Sim, you can use the phone to make calls but you can't surf the net even though you Optus Sim came with data ?

        • +1

I have just been told, to surf the net after changing to another network, you have to change the APN in the phone, whatever this mean. Check this out on Google and Youtube.

        • The phone has all three 3G bands used here in Australia by our 3 main carriers, but not 4G. You should still be able to use internet if all your settings are correct such as apn mentioned above. Where did you get unlock code from?

        • @ozhunter68:

Purchased off ebay. unlocked and could use it for calling and texting but couldnt go online. So ended up porting out of my number to telstra just so the wife could go online.

        • @bellz80: Just to clarify, data on this phone does work with other networks once unlocked.

I got the unlock code off eBay for $3.99 and the phone works with a Kogan/Voda sim. I just had to enter in the APN settings.

        • @eug:

Thanks both for your reply in order to clarify. Phone will work on all Australian networks ( Telstra/Optus/Vodafone ), having the 850mHz/900mHz/2100mHz 3G bands, no 4G though on this phone. Still good 5" screen phone that's reasonably fast and has 8GB ( less for user ) ROM for a $49 Android.
Most smartphone adjust automatically for new sim with different network once it"s unlocked for internet purposes. Looks like this is needed to be done manually on this model.

        • @eug:

Can i ask where did you get the APN code from?

        • +1

@bellz80: From the Kogan Mobile website. If you google your carrier with the term APN, you should be able to get it easily.

        • @ozhunter68:

Are you sure this has 900mhz? Online specs don't list it. Thanks.

          @Gofast:
Sorry about my wrong info. Your right, only 850mHz for Telstra and part of Voda, no 900mHz :-(

  • It is not the L5 Plus It is only L5 See specs here. It has no integrated GPS (just AGPS, network based) as the L5 Plus appears to have, Specs at http://www.imei.info/phonedatabase/86315-zte-blade-l5/

  • That's really bad even at only $49

    • +1

$49 will only give you $49 worth of phone :-) This phone has big enough screen for old folks to read their emails, whatsapp, surf the net etc. That's about it. Its a 3G phone with a tiny amount of storage.

      • +1

Yeh.. Ok maybe. Hope the touchscreen is decent and doesn't cause the old folks' blood pressure to rise

        • Would make a great gift for any "long lost" (good riddance) in-laws you may have ;)

      • though the zte fit 4g was on special for $49 and its twin brother the telstra 4gx buzz. much better with quad core and 4g.

Can anyone please tell me what the video playback looks like? Husband just bought himself Virtual Reality passive headgear and he's been using my iPhone4s to access YouTube 3D videos (the ones with the split screen in the middle). I'm hoping this would be a decent-enough replacement so I can get my phone back. :)

  • I bought one of these for my kids. Here's a summary to clarify what others have said.
It is the ZTE Blade L5
It is not the ZTE Blade L5 Plus
    5in display
Dual core 1.3ghz (adequate for non intense games but slow)
    1gb RAM
    8gb storage (about 3.8gb useable) +32gb upgradable
Has GPS and A-GPS (according to ZTE and one review)
    Android 5.1

    http://www.ztemobiles.com.au/Blade_L5.htm

I went for this over the 4GX (same price the week I posted this) mainly for the bigger screen and slightly higher res and much bigger battery (but loss of quad core CPU and 4G support).

The phone was for an existing Aldi sim. Despite being a telstra phone, it didn't work with Telstra. It popped up a message about unlocking SIM. It cost US 99c for an unlock code off eBay, which arrived within a minute of me sending the details.

I'm not using the phone myself and have little to say beyond this: The screen was bright and clear as long as you looked directly on (a security advantage) and the touches were responsive. There is no cyanogenmod for this and no upgrade past Android 5.1. If you look carefully, you might find an upgraded ROM, benefit unknown.

If CPU speed or 4G is important, get the 4GX instead. For any other spec, this is better than the 4gx, from what I saw.
