Advice on Starting a Blog

Hello :)

The Mrs and the twins are moving overseas while I'm going to stay in Melbourne. The kids have made me promise that I will write to them everyday, keep them updated on everything that's happening here and to send them lots of pics and drawings.

In return, they are planning to chronicle their year-long "adventure" in Mauritius, so that I don't feel like I'm missing out either.

I was thinking of starting a blog but I'm unsure as to how to go about doing it. Privacy is also a concern. I would prefer the blog to be private and only give access to family, close friends and possibly some of the kids' classmates.

Any suggestions /advice is much appreciated.

Thank you.
JJB

Starting a **private** blog is an awesome idea.

A passworded blog can be compromised by someone leaking the password. Hard to trace, impossible to plug.
A private group on FB is your best bet (or one on Google+), since you can manage exactly who can see it and revoke access if needed - added bonus of people already having an account and knowing how to use it (in FB's case, anyway. G+ is pretty deserted when it comes to casual users).

Alternatively, get everyone into cryptography, exchange security keys, and send encrypted emails to your mailing list!

Blog, Skype, Viber?! I thought these days people just Snapchat to keep each other updated…

    • Not 7 year olds.

Some of the free blogging sites like Blogger (Blogspot) and Wordpress.com allow you to create private blogs.

Not always secure. Some plugins and themes have security issues.

You'd be better off just using your standard social networking sites to keep in touch. You don't want to leak your personal information online for the whole world to see.

      • Nothing is truly secure. People regularly criticise my site for being weak because it's WordPress. Been going years without issue.

But I know what you mean ;)

Why can't you just do it over Facebook, Skype, FaceTime save the hassle of setting up a blog.

    • Because they would like to "chronicle" (the kids new favourite word) their adventure and we would also like to go back and read old posts.

Just use FB/Instagram and set the privacy setting to private. I prefer Instagram over FB these days, and unlike Snapchat, your photos will be there and you can add stories to the photos as well. You might want to check PATH as well, I quite like it but not many people use it - which is kinda good in a sense, so you don't get follower requests. And you know when your post has been viewed by your friends.

Set up a private facebook group

Friends blogged their trip on TravelPod and it looked great. You send invitations to and it requires a password. At the end I believe you can press a button and have it printed.

    • Sounds good. Thanks :)

  • They will never read the blog and you will resent writing it.

And then there will be a divorce, the wife will get pregnant with another mans child, the kids will do drugs and turn into Isis supporters and Ozbargain will be taken over by Ruslan Kogan.

      Seriously, why so pessimistic?

A pessimist, dear Scrimmy, is what an optimist calls a realist.
