Going to Europe with AmEx Points

I really want to try the Singapore first class suite, and now I have enough points for me and my partner to get to Europe thanks to the Amex bonus points. However, I probably don't have enough points for us to get back on first class as well. Short of kicking my partner to economy both ways, what is the best way for us to get back from Europe using Amex points? I have around 200,000 points right now and I plan to travel in June of next year.

  • Might help if you let us know the city in Australia you're flying from and where you'd prefer to fly into

  • Flying from Sydney. Any city in Western Europe really, probably something like France or Rome?

  • Have you got any other points in other airlines?

(You could 'kick yourself' to Y and let them stay in F)

    • or both fly in J?

  • Which SQ variant actually has the suites as averse to plain F?

  • Anyone know the cheapest way to get from Europe to Australia with airline miles?

    • Actually no, I'm now looking at just buying one way from Europe to Australia now. Seen so many return special prices, what's the best way to buy one way from Europe?

      • One way fares from Europe to Australia will cost you close to a return ticket. You could monitor European airfare blogs over the next few months and wait for an error fare to pop up. You can also fly Norwegian or Eurowings one way to Bangkok and then find your way back to Australia.

        • Ah thanks so much for that. Norwegian and Eurowings and the budget airlines that fly between Europe and Asia I take it? I actually wanted a small stopover in Asia to eat anyway, so that's great.

  • "I probably don't have enough points for us to get back on first class as well."

With around 200,000 points, you're actually a bit short on enough points for both of you to just go one way… From SYD - LHR, two of the cheaper 'saver' F award seats will set you back over 220,000 Krisflyer points including the 15% online booking discount. In order to get two of those cheap rewards seats as opposed to the much dearer "standard" awards, you'd need to book very quickly, as I understand that SQ only release two 'saver' F seats for each flight…

and on the way back, do you have points in any other schemes you could use?

    • Yes I actually just booked suites for June next year. Spent $30,000 to go to Antarctica which gave me enough points for Singapore.

I will probably have enough points to fly economy back for both of us (80,000) but I don't think that's the best way to use the points, as taxes and surcharges meant it probably comes out to around $800 per person anyway if I value points at 1c.

So I'm thinking either to somehow get a one way flight from Italy (maybe some Chinese airline) for under $700 or get budget airline back via Bangkok.

      Any thoughts?
