Optus Prepaid Activation Problems

I have had major problems with optus prepaid activation. I purchased some optus starter kits from Coles this week for $10 ($30 value). Tried to activate and port over from Vodafone. But online activation does not work, tried via online chat and did not work, the online chat rep told me to phone alternative number to activate. Phoned the activation call centre and they said its fine and will take 48 hours to port. but its been 72 hours and nothing yet. I talked via online chat and they said it must have failed.

I have received an email saying request to port, but optus has said they do not have a record of the port/activation and it must have failed due to faulty sim, but I tried their website again this time with an alternative optus sim and the website again is having "technical difficulties". So looks like I have to go through the whole ordeal again.

Anybody else is going through this looong and difficult process of activating a sim and porting?

Just be patient. Unfortunately, porting can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 7 working days.

    • Its not the wait i cant handle, but the possibility of waiting in vain. What if you rung optus 7 days later and they tell you "sorry we have no record of your porting". Please try again….

I'm afraid that the word "genius" does not seem to appear in either the desirable or essential selection criteria for a position at Optus…like bsmksg said, just wait for the computers to complete the automated process of porting, the drones may never even need to worry their pretty little heads about it. ;)

  • I ported from Vodafone on Monday 6th June to Optus prepaid $30 Sim ($10 paid) nil problems. I done so online and Optus Sim was activited within 10 minutes.

    • Thats exactly why im pissed. Previously took 10 mins, all they can say is faulty sim. Wtf?

  • Probably being held up due to ASIO random checks now that everyone is under suspicion at all times of being duh terrists.

  • Mate of mine activated a sim but never got the $ value.

ie: activated on the $2 a day plan, calls can be be made to it but nothing outgoing of course.

Optus have to get the house in order.

  • Sorry to see you are having prolems. .can I ask did the Starter pack have a sticker on the front saying "SIM contains no value until loaded when purchased"?…as well as a sticker over a Barcode on the back with "PEEL ME"?

I bought 2 of these with February '18 activation…when I got home and saw the 2 stickers and thought about..I took them back in case they were supposed to PEEL ME and load the Bar code for activation. ..as usual the consumer is the 'dummy'…"They are new system and get activated when we scan at point of sale…these don't need to be locked up in store because they useless until we sell them." This 'news' did not placate my suspicions of activation problems in 6-9 mths time, when Coles will deny all responsibility for not 'loading' the credit.

Anyone else got problems or thoughts?

Yes it did actually. I was suspicious of that too so thats why i activated that one first. However upon process of activation it stated there was $30 of value. So i assumed it was "loaded" with value. The CSR on phone and online chat didn't say no value either. So now all i can do is go into optus store and see if they can find out if its loaded with value or faulty sim.

      • Thanks…the other interesting info on the packet is "You can keep your existing number or we will give you a brand new one. You can also use this SIM for a SIM swap."

Sounds like they have removed the mandatory new number scenario.

  • FYI still waiting. The second sim still cant port and activate. So i head into optus store and the guy gave me a new $2 sim to port over. It seems to actually process via his computer this time. But now 24 hours since the 3rd attempt and still nothing yet. Rang the CSR via 133937 and given same response, "I have escalated it and you need to wait another 24 hours".

How can i remain optimistic that it will actually work. Is the system that poor that they cant see what the error message is and let me know whats going on.

  • I had similar issues a few times. Optus drove me crazy. I'm staying away from Optus now no matter how great their deals are.

    • Not worth saving the $20. I'm close to throwing away the $30 credit because the hours I have put in is not worth the time and effort. Amaysim uses the same network but has better infrastructure

      • I also had a $30 starter kit which I bought 6 months. couldn't activate and was deemed to be faulty by optus. Lost the money as I didn't keep the receipt and I removed the packaging to keep in my wallet.

        • Today is the 18th Jun and after escalation over phone and heading into an optus store to question and prioritising it….low and behold 10 mins later the new sim is activated amd ported. When i ask how come? their answer is sometimes it happens. Go figure. So 9 days later and 2 new sim cards i am an optus customer, now i cant wait to transfer out in 28 days
