Reflective Tape on outside of Car Illegal?

Dear ozbargains,

I wondering if it is illegal to stick reflective stickers like the one out the back of trucks on my car. Is that illegal?

I want to stick them on the car to avoid being hit at night on the side. Maybe sicking some on the side of the car.

  • How many times has your car been hit at night?!

    • Have you not seen some drivers in front weaving between lanes and at sleep at the wheel? ( not suggesting maybe on the phone or texting, that would never happen, as it is against the law).

If they are in front weaving, how will "TAP" help, would't you just slow down rather than ram them?

Now if they were behind going to sleep I doubt if they could see any reflective "TAP" 😀

  • It should be legal, provided that the reflectors are not luminous and do not dazzle other drivers.

  • In SA it's allowed… PROVIDED the reflective material isn't white in colour.

That many mine spec utes driving around darwwin covered in them.

But have you googled the australian road rules? Thats your first point of call when it comes to road/vehicle matters

    • Couldn'f find any explicit info on reflective sticker

You have a rather complicated life, don't you? ;)

Since the "TAP" is on the outside I guess it might be ok. On the inside you may get done for drink driving.

Then again, next like so many of your other strange posts here, if you put a worm farm in the boot, a TAP on the outside would make it easier to harvest the juice, which you can use on the Oxygenating plants you have in your bedroom, with your wife and girlfriend😷

AH I notice a mod has changed the TAP to TAPE. Too bad we were all enjoying turning on the TAP

I hope the mod that changed the tap was a licensed plumber…

  • Also check the Rules regarding whether you also need reflective handles and if the hot and cold are on left-right or vice versa.

  • We better check with cyclists, they have side refelctors in the spokes, but wait, my Harley had side reflectors too….

Old topic, but I'm going to add on to this because I found this through a search and the answers were not at all helpful.

The ADR's are defined for this at:
    https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2009C005792

South Australia has their requirements listed at:
    https://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/lz/c/r/road%20traffic%20(light%20vehicle%20standards)%20rules%202018/current/2018.5.auth.pdf

The long story short is, for SA at least:

    Front, White/Colourless (Division 18, 109.)
    Rear, Red. (Division 16, 105.)
    Side, Yellow. (Division 17, 107.)
