Gaming Monitor Help! Nvidia and Freesync

Hi Oz Bargainers

I need some help. I'm currently shopping for a gaming monitor and think I found a decent deal!

Acer XG270HU
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/31957/acer-xg270hu-27in-…

Apart from the ugly red look, this is the cheapest price I've found for a monitor that is QHD and also has a high refresh rate (144hz) with Freesync. Others I've found have been at least $700-$800.

The part that I need help with is I'm putting a GTX 1070 in my machine. Will Freesync still be beneficial or do I HAVE to utilise G-Sync technology?

The only other drawback is that its a TN panel and not IPS.

Any advise is appreciated.
Does anyone have experience with this monitor? Is it a good buy or better to spend an extra ~$200-$300?

Thanks,
Steve

Nvidia is not compatible with Freesync, sorry buddy. Conversely, AMD and G-sync incompatible.

    My understand is…
They're two different technologies; G-sync involves a GPU incorporated in the monitor for sync, whereas Freesync uses software and coding as part of the AMD GFX card.

    Please correct if anyone disagrees.

    • Thanks mate
From the bit of research I've done, I thought that was the case.
I went into harvey norman yesterday and spoke to the pc gaming "expert" and he told me you can still take advantage of the "adaptive sync" technology… Maybe he was just trying to get a sale…

He's talking about Vsync, which is dreadful. You don't even need a a special monitor for it. Most Nvidia cards are compatible. It causes stuttering if you don't have a good enough card and aims to reduce tearing.

No one I know uses Vsync.

      • You could just wait for the RX 480 and get two in crossfire for the Freesync. Looking cheaper than a single 1080, but that doesn't factor the need for adequate power supply, nor the dual PCI motherboard… nor the Australia tax when it finally lands.

          Thanks!
I'm just not too big on the whole SLI thing..
I'd pick a single GPU over SLI anyday
Gonna stick with the 1070 option and rather spend a bit extra on a better monitor

If you have a Nvidia graphics card, get a Gsync monitor. If it's AMD, get a Freesync monitor.
