Can't Login to My Modem Router Anymore

hey folks,

I just bought a Netgear D6400 AC1600 modem wireless router. Connected my LAN port from my PC to either of the 4 available LAN ports (not internet) and of course the phone line in DSL. I noticed I cannot login to router via http://192.168.0.1 nor www.routerlogin.net (or .com).

I used my Mobile phone to check WiFi and its good, I was able to login to the router via my phone using 192.168.0.1 in it's browser and set it up.

I deleted my IE 11 cache, and Firefox but still get a "Page Cannot be Found" when I used 192.168.0.1 on my PC with Internet connection.

I unplugged the router and went back to the old on I had for 5 years, and I ALSO CANNOT login to the router via 192.168.0.1 on PC

Disabled Kaspersky Internet Security and reset factory settings in case it's blocking a script, still no go. I don't know WTF is going on

EDIT: Only thing that I recall that's changed in my system is that I upgraded Kaspersky Internet Security to 2016

open up your command prompt (press START button and type cmd). Once a black box opens up, type in ipconfig
you should see something that says Default Gateway, can you go to that IP address in your browser?

    • well.. 192.168.0.1 IS my Gateway, that's how I accessed the Router login via my mobile browser
Its just that my PC says [Page Cannot be Displayed] when I type in that very address.

=( something on my PC is not allowing the Router Access

      • And what was the IP address of the PC at the time?

        • IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.2 (my PC)
          Subnet: 255.255.255.255
          Gateway: 192.168.0.1

        • @frostman:

Maybe try in 'safe mode with networking'?

        • Subnet should be 255.255.255.0

Other than that if it doesn't work likely then could be the security software. I don't think safe mode would help any

        • open up command prompt again and type ipconfig /flushdns

This should clear the cache and hopefully get you back onto the page

        • @freemoneyhunter:

          Subnet should be 255.255.255.0

yep corrected that, still no go

        • @ryudo222:

open up command prompt again and type ipconfig /flushdns

          tried that, doesn't work

  • try 10.0.0.1

    • didn't work

  • Try 192.168.1.1, soemtimes the subset is different to wireless, otherwise try this.

Go to control panel, network settings and right click the network adaptor and select preferences. Got to IPV4 properties and select.

    IP Address 192.168.0.25
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS 8.8.8.8 (or 192.168.0.1 if your router forwards DNS would be better option)

    • I tried setting a manual IP like 192.168.0.90 and a manual Gateway of 192.168.0.100.

      Still can't access Router.

The only thing I remember that's changed was I upgraded my Kaspersky Internet security from 2015 to 2016, but I don't know how that will block it?

      • If you entered everything in as I said in the network adaptor it should work. (not Gateway of 192.168.0.100 won't work)

Else reenable DHCP on the adaptor then try….

        Open a commandprompt

type ipconfig /release and press Enter
        ipconfig /renew and press Enter

It is possible your Internet security is responsible for the problem, but hard to find out without further diagnostics.

  • Have you tried a new network cable? Maybe something went pop during the changeover. That would explain why you can't connect to your old router.

  • Open up command prompt as administrator
    Netsh winsock reset
Press enter restart and try again

  • Could always try https://192.168.0.1/ and https://192.168.0.1:8443. If they fail, then try going to https://www.whatismyip.com/ and plug that in - eg if it says 123.123.111.123 then try https://123.123.111.123:8443

All else fails, do a reset on the router (https://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9665) and start the config again. When redoing the config be careful when making any changes to the default settings - in particular in the 'advanced' section - on some routers you can actually disable local access to the system itself (this is when, for example, you are an admin of many routers and want to be able to remotely manage them but don't want people on the local network to muck about with them).

    • Ah - just re-read then bit where it appears you can still access the router via your mobile, but can't via a wired connection? If this is still the case then I'd connect on to the router via wifi (mobile or laptop) and then check those advanced settings.

    • Logged into the Router via my Mobile Phone browser…went to advanced > Remote Management,

It says: Remote management address: 60.240.xxx.xxx:8080

I did that on my PC browser, and it still cannot access it.

No option to enable/disable local access =(

      I think it's Kaspersly

In which case it's easy enough to prove/disprove - disable that Kasp. software on the pc and see if it helps. Sounds like you've already tried that in which case I would note that if you have remote management enabled, then that points to me that you have actually enabled it as it would almost certainly be disabled by default. Actually - just checked the manual (http://www.netgear.com/support/product/D6400#User Manual) and indeed it is disabled. If you haven't done that, or don't remember doing it, and you haven't purchased it from an ISP who remotely manage it, then what I would recommend is (given it's a new router anyhow) reset it to defaults and redo - it's possible that you may have accidentally changed something in there that is causing this. At the very least try disabling that option and see what happens. Cheers.

        • Thanks for the tip mate

          OK Major Update

I logged into the Router via a spare laptop, and turned on Remote Management via external IP with port 8080.
I was able to login to the router on my PC.

Back to 192.168.0.1, I still cant!!!

Big issues on Northern Gold Coast since a
Telstra outage a few weeks ago took out many people's modems.
Not sure if this is relevant to you.

      C'mon dude

  • if you think kapersky is causing your problem, does it have an option to temporarily disable it?

    • Yes, I temp disabled it, it still wouldn't work.

Kaspersky support got me to add 192.168.0.1 as a trusted Network, did that and still didn't work

      • Try adding the Ethernet Adaptor to Trusted Zone in Kaspersky

  • this may sound stupid, but try like this (type exactly this): http://192.168.0.1

(instead of just 192.168.0.1). Sometimes modern browsers default to a google search of that on the public internet, don't find it, and just say they cannot connect. Rather than trying to go to it as a web site. the "http://" will force the browser to go straight there. Worth a try.

Also, in the command prompt, what happens when you do "ping 192.168.0.1"?

I would have thought maybe your anti-virus software may have been blocking, but because your phone also cannot get to it, I think it may not be that.

    • Still didn't work with HTTP:// infront

      When I ping 192.168.0.1, I get a ping reply

  • OK Major Update

    • Make sure it's running latest firmware. Then reset it to defaults, start again but don't change anything in advanced section. Then when everything is working, can make further changes if you want but just do one thing at a time and make sure nothing bad has happened - if it has, then roll the change back. Cheers.

      • The NetGear DGB2200 is an old device, so it's running on latest firmware since years ago.

i.e nothing has change in the router for it to block access via 192.168.0.1

    • So did you login via http://192.168.0.1 using the spare laptop? I presume so.

You dont have any sort of VPN software running on your computer do you?

Have you tried disabling Windows Firewall, if you have it turned on?

And in your web browser proxy settings, you arent using any sort of proxy are you? If so, turn it off or make an exception for 192.168.0.1.

      • So did you login via http://192.168.0.1 using the spare laptop? I presume so.

        Yes, enabled the Remote Management

Went back to the troubled PC, and typed in ExternalIP:8080 and it worked.

You dont have any sort of VPN software running on your computer do you?

Yes I have PureVPN installed, but it's not running at the moment…what could that do?

Have you tried disabling Windows Firewall, if you have it turned on?

It's turned off by default as Kaspersky Internet Security is on

And in your web browser proxy settings, you arent using any sort of proxy are you? If so, turn it off or make an exception for 192.168.0.1.

In IE, I don't have a Proxy set

  • folks, thanks for your support, I sorted it out by eventually uninstalling Kaspersky IS and was able to login

It was a last resort given I actually disabled the product completely and still wasn't able to access my local router login. I also contacted Kaspersky support and they showed me how to add 192.168.0.1 to the trusted network, nop - that still didn't work.

    Finally peace of mine.
