Holiday in Sydney - Best Options for Public Transport?

Me and 2 mates are off on a holiday to Sydney tomorrow for about 3 and a half days.

I use public transport a lot in Brisbane but am not very familiar with the system in Sydney.

We'll be splitting an Uber from the airport. But for general transport around to different areas of the city, what's the best option? Buy an Opal card? Paper tickets?
I'm also a uni student here in Brisbane if that helps.

Also, if anyone has some recommendations for things to do while we're there I'd love to hear them!

Cheers

Get an opal card to get around.

As for places to go. Go darling harbour and opera house. Botanical gardens. Vivid festival is on. Bring a camera.

Great! I'll defiantly check out some of the Vivid events.

Do you just pick up an Opal card at a news agency? Do they need a deposit?

Just go to any news agent. Hand over some cash starting from $10 and ask for an opal card. No deposit. Just whatever you put in is what you can use.

Qld PT require $10 deposit - WTF, how much cash are they holding at any one point in time ?

          @MITM:

          what a rip.

        • @MITM: That's why I was surprised that there was no deposit for Opal!
Now that I think about it, that is a lot of money Translink have.

@stickyfingers: and the total would be put on the overnight cash rate gaining interest. In fact, all bank accounts are put on the overnight cash market and then repatriated the next day, except no entry is marked on your savings account.

Opal is good if you are near a train station:
    https://www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/opal_for_visitors/

Note it works on buses, ferries and light rail too.

    • Thanks for the link. It was super handy!

  • What's the ozbargain place for Sydney domestic airport? The maccas/kfc/krispykreme area?

Btw weather this weekend is screwed. We're getting another storm for the whole weekend :(

    • Ahh damn, hopefully it won't mess up my flight to go home!

        You should be okay..

And to answer my own question from before, uber can now (since about a month ago) pick up passengers at the free public pickup area (no longer need to trek the extra few minutes to maccas).

        • That's awesome! See you soon Sydney :)
