What Would You Do-Move Back to The City or Stay in The Suburbs?

We live a distance away from the city.
the schools are not bad but being private, the fees are approx. $12k a year.
The school is rated 150 with regards to ATAR.

We both work and have stable jobs.
Would you move to closer to the city to a public school which is rated number 60 in ATAR?
Pros are that there is no school fees ie saving of $12k a year.
Cons,living close to the city.
The wife can get a job in the city with time.

The only other con is that I would see my family on the weekends mostly.

In terms of money ,we are renting and paying 400 a week now.
If we move to the city,we would pay 700 a week.
it boils down to the same thing in terms of money.

What would you do?

Stay in the suburbs and make the kids travel further to a public school?

    • Some 'good' public schools have zoning policies…better check with the school first.

    Depends on the Internet speed.

in the city they have adsl2+ but in the burbs there is nbn.
      go figure !

      • That settles it then, stay in the burbs.

  • travel time to public school is approx. 10 min tops

you list cons as living close to the city.
what makes living close to the city as a con for you?
for some people living close to the city is a pro.

    Your Points:
    Pros:
    No school fees
    Cons:
    Closer to City
    Have to find Job
    Meet family less often

Your only pro is school fees which are $12k per year. Your rent ($300 * 52 = $15600) is more than the school fees, thus negating the only pro you have. I don't see why you would move if you now have 3 Cons and 0 Pros. :/

Except in the extremes, the cohort is not really going to affect the outcome of the kids ATAR result.

Just spend the rent savings on extra tuition if they need it.

  • As far as VCE goes, it's more so the parent's, child environment, family, assistance, discipline to study and extra curricular activities that separates the high achievers from the low.
A private school in the realm of 12k p.a. would more than likely fulfill their role of your child's education the rest is more or less dependent on you and the other factors I mentioned.
I'd look at more than just a ranking, invest some time to chat with the principal, see students and facilities etc.
This is all of course, without consideration for re-location costs, rent, transport, home equity opportunity cost, peace and quiet etc.

It is up to the kid

  • What about moving to another burb where the ATAR scores are higher at the local public school?

    • Also what about staying where you are and paying $12k on private tutoring? At $60 an hr you can almost get 4 hrs per week.

Why such a focus on ATAR scores?
Surely your kids having such limited time to spend with their parent is the huge issue in the lifestyle you are proposing.

  • The older I get the further I want to move away from the city, coastal of course.
It is a personal thing but I prefer the quality lifestyle vs the sardine can feeling of living in a cramped and rushed city. Re children… while the high end schools are not available in these areas the life experience may outweigh that negative.
Is it about lifestyle or $'s?

  • The relationship between success at school and success in life is untenable.
Family life and happiness are far more worthy goals.

I'd pick school over lifestyle. I'd wanna set my kid up with the best possible tools for their future. That said, your kid also needs to be the kid that wants to learn and puts the effort into it.

tbh i think proper parenting is far more important than the school in terms of acquiring life skills (outside academia). Sure there are extremes, but a large cohort with a wide range of streamed classes would be the most beneficial imo

      • If OP is considering moving to a better area with good schools, then he is already in the proper parenting group.
