Use It or Lose It AHM

I am with AHM, and i have $1k to spend each year on health related activities.

This resets on June 30th, and i still have around $500 worth of "Credit" to spend… I am wondering what i should use this on? I have a dentist visit in a week, but has anyone else found themselves in this position and found a good way to juice these funds for everything they're worth?

Thanks

  • Contact Lenses - you can never buy too many
    Glasses - same goes
    Prescription Sunglasses
    Massage
    Accupuncture

    • Thanks.
Don't need glasses, but could always go for a check up.
Had a massage tonight, but that only takes up $66 worth.

A visit to the optometrist will likely be bulk-billed, unless they need to take any fancy pictures (e.g. retina scans).

  • Are you sure it expires 30 June? Usually health insurance benefits expire at calendar year end, 31 December.

    • AHM's policy's expire on financial year as opposed to the calendar year.

  • Shoes, pillows.

    • Really? Pillows? i get the health benefits, but surely they wouldn't cover that?

    Blackjack and hookers

Just make sure they're hookers who give private health rebates. Not one of those "dodgy" blackjack and hooker places.

        Cash only = legit right?

        Oh, you'll get more than a rebate…

  • Not sure if it's covered so just throwing it out there - Physio? People rarely realise something's wrong until it starts causing significant damage.

I assume you're still going to have to pay a gap though. Isn't that like saving money by buying something that's 50% off even if you don't really need it?

I wouldn't change your spending habits to try to max out benefits unless you don't have to pay a gap. Otherwise you're spending money you wouldn't otherwise have spent…not a great savings measure.

If some of the coverage is no gap though, then go crazy!

    • That is true. They pay out at 60% of the value.

eg. $90 massage after 60% rebate only costs $36.

I was keen to raise the idea here though to see what other people have experienced, and see if there was sneaky ways to make my Health Insurance work for me.

I'm willing to spend a little, if i get a bargain out of it. Not sure if Gym membership is covered, but i wonder if i could prepay for a 6 month gym membership?

  • sex change operation? You can do another operation to change it back the next year around the same time when you have to use-it-or-lose-it again.

Once you lose "it", it aint coming back mate

Can only claim operations for "Pre existing conditions", is being a Male a Pre-existing condition?

  • Lose not loose. You're welcome.

Corrected… If only health insurance could be used on speling classes ;)
