Need Help Finding a Power Supply!

Hi,

Hoping someone can find me a good deal or just a recommendation on a power supply. I just purchased 2x EVGA GTX 480's for a SLI configuration.

I have found one on amazon that seems like good value (Just over $200AUD) but not sure if it would be compatibile here in Australia?

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Modular-Crossfire-Warranty-210-G…

Here is the rest of my build if anyone has any recommendations on upgrades (*= Upgrading)

Asus H81M Motherboard *
Intel G1820 CPU *
Coolermaster Thunder 500W PSU *
Coolermaster Scout Storm 2* (Upgrading to Define R5)
WD 3TB Blue
Samsung 240GB EVO SSD
TP Link Archer T9E Wifi Card

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Went with the Corsair RM1000X, Thanks everyone for your help

but not sure if it would be compatibile here in Australia?

Usually they have a 120/230v power switch. Dig down into the specifications and check, if it has both you will be fine, you just need an aussie "kettle cord" or a normal computer (female) to 240v mains plug male.

I assume you've checked MSY and other local stores to see if they have what you need that fits your budget? There's some online sites such as pcpartpicker.com which allow you to input all of the components and it will spit out the amount of wattage you need for your rig. My advice is to check that out first to make sure you aren't spending over the top for a PSU you don't need.

    • hahaha, i call it the 'rice cooker' cord. funny how it's so universal

  • Just check the specifications, if it says 110 - ~240 volts input you're good.

IME most PSU's work with both voltages but check.

BTW what are you using this computer for? It's a very um … esoteric collection of parts :D. Is it just bits you have laying about?

    • Thanks for that i will have a look.

Im using it for a bit of everything really, I also use this PC for work sometimes some gaming it all depends.

To be completely honest when i first built it i just parts that i could get the best deals on hence why they are a bit random (The last 3 parts i just got with the 20% off eBay sale). I know it probably sounds crazy that i just bought 2 480's as well but i got a really deal on them and they have good benchmarks by the looks and they go a lot faster then my GT 630 i currently have

      • Try your luck. SLI is hit and miss unfortunately. I had twin 560ti's in my missus' old PC and in some cases it worked well, and in other cases it didn't work at all.

1000 watts will be overkill. I used to get away with 750 just fine. According to the specs, it's a 110 - 240v auto-switching supply, so it will work fine.

        • Yeah i have heard SLI can be a bit that way.

I do agree with you there 1000W most likely will be overkill but i have heard the 480's are power hungry cards especially in SLI and im also thinking of future proofing incase i ever wanted to upgrade to anything high end

Like i mentioned below as well im now deciding from the EVGA supernova & Corsair RM100x

        • @TheVoucherKing:

indeed they are power hungry http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/nvidia_geforce_…

hope you got the 480's for a good price because it doesn't seem worth it

Ive never heard of the PSU you linked so cant say anything about it i do however have the EVGA 750w G2 which i like a lot and it's nice and quiet.

part of the reason i went with the g2 was cause it has 10 years warranty while the one you linked has only 5 years warranty.

^my recommendation also the store i bought my psu from.

    btw http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list…

this is a tiered list of psu's the GQ isnt even on it for some reason the G2 is tier 1.

    • Thanks for the recommendation i will certainly keep that it in mind. I have saved that list too, very handy

I have just found the Corsair RM1000x which has a 7 year warranty and i get can that for $215 from PC Byte.

I think these two might be the ones to decide from!

      • The tier 1 750W G2 was my pick too after a few hours research, ordered one but had to rush out and pick up something else local as an urgent job came through and couldn't wait for it to arrive. So I still have it, sealed, if you'd like it for $130 + postage (or pickup Cental Coast, NSW), along with purchase receipt. Bought Apr 26.

GTX 480, boy that stuff is ooold!

(not that I can speak, because I'm using a HD6850 right now which is just as old)

Hope you have good cooling because SLi 480's will get hot. Better stick in a 140mm fan into the side for some extra air intake

The biggest problem you will run into actually, is the lack of VRAM — the 480 only has 1.5GB by default and many GPU's nowdays have twice that amount.
    http://www.tweaktown.com/tweakipedia/90/much-vram-need-1080p…

You might have to play the latest games without Anti-aliasing to reduce VRAM memory consumption, since AA forces the GPU to render the scene again (can be a lot of work for an older-gen GPU)

    • I'm still rocking a HD5850…..keeps me toasty in winter.

  • I did some reading and found the OEMs for the different EVGA PSUs. The G2 is a Super Flower OEM, the GS is Seasonic G, and the GQ is FSP. All of them rate very highly in terms of quality.
