Scrapping the home phone

Currently on Optus broadband and phone package.

Looking to get rid of the home phone, and use mobile. Move to a Naked DSL internet plan, and then NBN when it arrives.
Am looking to set the mobile up to use Skype or similar for many calls.

Anyone else done this and can say it is alot cheaper?

I may need to upgrade my mobile plan to one with more data.

  • I've used that setup for many years. Until now with Pennytel, but they're shutting down shortly and migrating their users to MyNetFone.
Call prices depends on your plan. I only make 20-40 calls per month so choose not to pay a fixed monthly fee. Calls are 2 or 3c per minute within Australia, similar to major developed countries and vary widely for other countries.
Quality is acceptable on my end but sometimes person on the other end says I cut for a couple of seconds.

    Home phone whats that?
Im with iinet nbn and they chuck in a voice service which i dont use but could if i connected a phone.
But no need every family member has a mobile and are called directly.
Depending on the optus mobile plan u might have unlimted text and calls anyway

  • On NBN (Westnet) and we use Skype or Facetime. At home we use our iPads for Skype and Facetime and reception is good. Skype also on my mobile. Do have home phone on the plan which has limited use. Many of our family has no home phone and uses Skype, FaceTime and their mobiles.

  • my Devoted NBN plan is $66 a month, 25/5 Tier 2 Unlimited data with no phone.

Previously was with TPG ADSL2+ Unlimited which was $59.95 a month which included phone line, but never used it.

  • In this day and age, the telcos are throwing data at you. Optus will give you 10gb per month, which is pretty bloody good. You could almost do away with your entire internet package if you didn't need a lot of downloads etc

I ditched the home phone about 5 years ago - only people who called me on it were my grandparents and telemarketers. Now everyone except the telemarketers can just call my mobile only

  • Haven't had a landline for a while now, and back when we did the only calls we got were confused old people and telemarketing.

Long calls (family) happen over Facetime, Skype or Google Hangouts via wifi. Short calls we just use our mobile phones. I don't have "unlimited" calls on my plan just something like $200 worth of "funny money" so it's never a problem. But then I checked my phone recently and in the past 2 years I've made less than 10 hours of calls so YMMV.

  • I haven't had a home phone for years. Use mynetphone and have the old Telstra analog DECT phone connected to the ATA that came when I signed up.

My technophobic family can't tell the difference, apart from the fact that our number changed and the phone bill is now only a couple of $ a month

  • We ditched the landline a while ago but got a free one with cable package including long distance calls. Technically the land line is still gone as this one runs over the Internet (the voip ATA box is integrated into the cable modem). ONLY downside is when the cable goes down, so does the line. No biggie as can use mobiles but the towers can also go down especially during heavy rainfall.

I keep my home phone for ADSL because it's still cheaper than a Naked DSL connection. But I make about $0 a month of calls on it.

I'm with Exetel which gives me 50GB+50GB for $40 a month including line rental. If you find a naked DSL plan cheaper than that let me know.

  • I've got a home phone - I need a fixed line for ADSL 2+.

Our monthly cost: is Telstra budget line rental $25, plus $30 unlimited TPG ADSL 2+.

The Telstra budget line rental used to be $20 but it's been gradually increasing.
