AMEX issued credit card bonus points when you already hold another AMEX issued card

I'm a current AMEX issued card holder (platinum charge, to be exact) building up a sizeable warchest of qantas frequent flyer points.

AMEX have a number of good bonus point deals attached to other AMEX issued credit cards, but their terms and conditions state that these are valid for new sign ups only (i.e. no bonus points for people who hold or have previously held an AMEX issued card in the past 12 months).

I've read a few comments from people suggesting that it is possible to obtain bonus points as a current AMEX cardholder, and some of these comments have mentioned it is easier to obtain the bonus points when using referral links. Before I 'risk' taking the plunge on another AMEX card application, does anyone have any first hand experience of this?

  • Yes, I hold an Amex Plat Edge and applied for the Velocity Amex and got the bonus points. But still not guaranteed to work all the time, you will just have to risk it and hope they award you the points.

    • Did you disclose on your application that you were an existing Amex member, or did you leave that section blank?

  • I hold an ANZ black as the supplementary holder and applied for another years later as the main and got the points and also disclosed . When the shop small was coming out a few months ago I also got the essential card which has no fees and signed my kids up for supplementary cards but used someones referral link from here and we both got $75 after I spent the minimum on it . I have now thrown them in a drawer and will pull them out for other shop small and other good amex deals - heres the link to peoples referrals <Mod: No solicitation> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

    • Bank issued AMEX (like your ANZ AMEX Black) has never been an issue in this regard - the question is whether you can take advantage of a sign on bonus for an AMEX issued cards when you already hold anothr AMEX issued card. Have updatec post to make this clear.

  • Just changed mine from a Velocity Gold to the Platinum edge in May and received the 15k bonus.

Thinking of applying for the velocity platinum for the 100k bonus shortly. Can anyone confirm if the points don't rock up that you can cancel the card and be refunded pro-rata on the annual fee. Would hate to pay $349 for just another card without the points.

Hi. Both my husband and I applied for the Velocity Platinum after I posted this - me being a current AMEX issued cardholder, and my husband having cancelled one in the past few months. Our points did indeed come through a couple of days after my first spend. So you should be fine (at least from the points crediting perspective, not too sure about the pro rate refund - but will update here if I come across any info).
