Selling or Disposing of a MY2000 Magna with Busted Automatic Transmission

Hello ozBargaineers,

In the shock of the century, the car that I didn't spend a lot of money on has finally conked out. The car is an automatic 2000(ish) model Mitsubishi Magna. According to the RACV tow guy regarding it's transmission; "It was just it's time to go". (he was a wise man)
Quotes have ranged from $1500 to $3000 to get fixed.
At this point, I think I just want to buy a more reliable car and bugger this one off.

Do I need to get the transmission fixed and then supply a roadworthy to sell it legally? I'd heard rumours of people getting hundreds of $$ for their cars that had been practically turned into cubes, but now I've been told the scrapyard will take it off my hands for a grand total of zero dollars.
I'm beginning to think the most I'll get out of it is if I siphon the fuel tank. Cutting my losses could be the only option.

Ideas? Suggestions? Insults? I am not a car guy* so fixing it myself is out of my league, even though that sounds like it could be pretty fun.

Thank you for your time, and you look great today

*by car guy I mean someone who is good with cars, not someone like optimus prime

  • scrapyard… they pay you $50 and flatbed your car away

What sort of condition is the rest of the car?

    • It runs okay/fine, after I'd spent a bit of money on it around 8 months ago replacing the solenoid

  • You could try the car wreckers as opposed to the metal scrapyard, but getting it there might be a problem. You won't get much in that deal but it's like your car gets to donate it's organs. It will continue to live on in some way LOL. Definitely preferable over being squooshed.

    • Yeah, it'd get squooshed eventually anyway

  • Part it out and sell it on gumtree

I got $150 from wreckers yesterday to pick up a 1997 Ford Falcon in Sydney so you should be able to get a similar amount. Google car wreckers/scrap/cash for cars for the city you live in and ring them.

Car registration fee/CTP/3rd party insurance refunded so got more money back. Wreckers didn't care about any rego.

    • Yes depending on length of rego, you can get back probably more than you do on the car

  • Have a look on gumtree in your area. I found a guy that pays $250 for 6 cylinders and $150 for 4 cylinders. He came and picked them up and handed me cash on the spot. Wasn't interested if they ran or anything, just that we hadn't taken out anything from the engine.

The engines in those are dead set reliable. The 3.5 V6 worth more than the busted car.
Look for someone after the engine, list it for parts on Gumtree and set it for a quick sale.
Don't try and fix it yourself.
You will not be able to fix the tranny. The magna autos are complex and finnicky.

  • Put it on gumtree for $400 for parts only.

Include in the listing "You are buying at your own risk… etc"

  • As previous posts have mentioned, I think you will get the most money out of it by taking the car apart and selling the components individually. This requires a good amount of labor and time though. The easiest way to make a few dollars is to sell the car for scrap metal but you will not get as much money.

I guess it all depends on how much time you want to put into it! Thats my 2 cents anyway!

  • Thanks all for your 2 cents, I have gone to gumtree and will hopefully receive more than nothing!
