  • I have no carpet in my place (despise the stuff), but I can advise on the bamboo flooring, assuming that you're talking about a product that already had a 'finish' on it before it was laid down in your house. I laid a floor like that down myself in my joint about 5 years ago (click system from Bunnings), and it's been totally awesome ever since. For a 'standard clean' you can just vacuum it with the 'push out brush thingy' erm, 'pushed out' on the vacuum nozzle, and for a 'hard-core' clean you can use a steam mop. Do not use a 'traditional mopping' ('wet mopping') technique that involves actually slopping water onto the floor then mopping it up.

"Steam Clean" is a term used in the industry, but rarely involves the use of steam. Most units use hot water and detergent that is injected into the pile, then immediately extracted, containing the dissolved dirt. You'd be surprised how much dirt is actually in even a clean carpet. At all costs avoid the rotary scrubber-type "shampoo" cleaners — all they do it flatten the pile and permanently damage it. You'd have better luck with a disk sander! I can recommend a domestic unit such as Bissell which comes in various grades depending on your environment and the level of dirt (there are units of various capacities with various attachments for pets, stairs and upholstery etc). Owning one lets you spot clean and total clean more regularly than having to organise someone coming in to do it. It doesn't damage the pile, it leaves it slightly moist after cleaning but it is completely dry overnight and it leaves the house feeling fresh for days. Leaving dirt particles trapped in the pile actually does more damage due to abrasion. It also kills and extracts dust mites. It's not much more effort than running a vacuum over the area, although you need to vac first. This is designed to extract dissolved dirt, not large particles and debris. These cleaners also have hard floor cleaning brushes and formula for tiles and floorboards, but be careful wetting wood, especially if it is a floating floor with unsealed wood exposed — it will swell. Shop around as they go on sale often, and they start from a couple of hundred dollars.
