Negotiating The Waiting Period for Health Insurance

Hi, my partner turned 22 in March this year and was therefore kicked off her parent's PHI policy. She has been without cover since.

She recently tried joining my Bupa policy (converting it from individual to couples cover) but was told that because she did not switch to new PHI immediately after getting removed from her parent's policy (it's been 3 months), she would now be subject to the 2, 6 and 12 month waiting periods for various levels of cover.

Are there any funds for which these waiting periods can be negotiated on? Or do you guys have any ideas which fund she should join instead of Bupa?

Thanks!

  • The health fund and policy she should choose depends on what benefits she will be using. So shop around work out which policy will suit best and then wait until there is an offer or ask about waiving the 3 & 6 month waiting periods. No fund is likely to waive the 12 months waiting periods but it doesn't hurt to ask.

  • Hi,

Usually cover is until the 21st Birthday and then there is a two month window to arrange independent cover.

There may (depending on the Health Fund) be an exception to this if your partner was a Student Dependent after turning 21, but only if Full-Time Student, Single, etc.

Also, if under 25 your partner may have been able to stay on her Parents policy as an Adult Dependent (costs an extra 25% of their health cover premium).

Are their any other circumstances, going overseas etc.
