Going to NZ, Christchurch-Queenstown-Milford Sound back to Christchurch Areas. Suggestions? 14 days ish

Please give suggestions for cheap car rental (not dodgy) or if possible a small camper for 3 adults. Places to visit and activities to do as well as accomodations.
Budget for around $200-300 accomodation per night. Does anyone have any suggetions or can point me in the right direction?

I did a South Island road trip during May. Over 10 days I did Christchurch-Kaikoura-Greymouth-Franz Josef Glacier-Queenstown-Lake Tekapo-Christchurch. 14 days should be more than enough for what you'd like to do. For cheap car rental, I'd recommend Apex Car Rental. The cars are a little older, but the prices are much better than somewhere like Avis or Hertz.

The Garden Hotel would be my recommendation if you're in that area , great personal service, beware there are still a lot of road closures and disruption due to the earthquake repairs. There are areas where whole communities have been demolished and all that remain are footpaths and street lights.

Oh. I'm going later in the year hopefully for 2-3 weeks. I'm gonna join this thread :)

Campers are really expensive. I haven't looked much into it yet but I'm thinking of a car for the north island and a camper for south.

Visit Doubtful Sound fjordland - went on an overnight/day cruise with Real Journey's, the night part was a big storm, wet but safe!.
Next day the multitude of waterfalls cascading down the mountainside was spectacular.
The remote & HUGE wilderness was sensational, and the cost was affordable IF purchased at the right time and season.

    • Will put that on the list. Thanks

  • If you get a camper then be very careful on downhill roads in the mountains in winter. A good friend of mine hit ice and went over the side. Rolled the camper 3 times. Luckily she and her family were not hurt. The rental place tried to claim costs for roll over damages (that weren't covered in the comprehensive insurance they had taken out). Hmmm.accident damage was covered but not rollover. Possibly a freak accident but still worth taking into account the difference in driving a camper in comparison to a regular car.
