Considering buying one for my 7yo who 'wants an iPad', mainly for playing games.
Would appreciate thoughts from 'the community'.

Get an Ipad mini. Not because they are better, but because other kids have iPad. They can share same experience, play the same games, do facetime ….
yeh the Xioami looks good,I love the new Android OS and heaps of great games. Get lots of cheap Play credit by using the Telsta prepaid credit when they are on special.
Apart from being a 7.9" display I'd say that this would fit the bill perfectly. Xiaomi, as I'm sure you're aware, has a good reputation. The device will be able to run all the current titles well and comes in significantly cheaper than an iPad.
