Advice on Bluescreening Asus Motherboard/AM3 Phenom II

We've had this build for a while- all good.

We're now experiencing bluescreens during games.

Have done the usual: Memtest (each stick), swap RAM slots, reseat all, wipe contacts, unplug drives, update all (BIOS, drivers, etc)— still bluescreens.

Opinions on bothering to replace w/new (old) mobo or just look for a decent new board. I hate to replace ALL, but w/o a way to test CPU vs. mobo..

Ideas?

Thanks to all the OZB geeks out there,

:)

  • Have you also tried Windows in safe mode and see if it still happens? And doing a complete reinstall (drastic measures, but very effective in determining if it's a software or hardware issue.

If you reinstalled Windows and you are still crashing, then you will need to buy some spare parts to test your build. Won't cost you much since second hand parts are cheap…

Phenom is very old, if you need spare boards go look up OCAU trade/sell forums and you might score a board for less than $20 bux.

    bluescreens during games.

This could be a GPU problem.

    Yes to all.

    Tried onboard + dedicated. Same.

@bargain: relate your experiences to vote CPU?

    Thanks all,

    • I have had something similar in the past. Swapped mem and vid card and nothing. Was my cpu.. Every instance oa different though. The other times is a software fault for me.

  • Check the power supply and make sure that all output voltages are still within normal limit. Ageing PSU can sometimes do that too as your GPU draws more power for 3D rendering.

  • Downgrade video card drivers.

Because I'd guess that's what it is if it isn't a hardware fault.

  • I know we've tried at least four video card versions (newest Palit GTX-960 4GB), plus NVIDIA's.

I bought a good, new PSU just ahead of the card, so doubt it's that (though I suppose a slight possibility)…my multimeter is dead (of course).

Looking at WhoCrashed, it was complaining about USB drivers- so they were updated, along with the video. It seemed to chug along well for a day, and now crashes during game-play (non-blue-screen).

Wouldn't I be happy if there were a more in-depth version of WhoCrashed which could point you to the culprit?

  • If it bluescreens again, I will. We seemed to pass that one by in favor of the game crash (which is documented online). So, the game crash comes ahead of the bluescreen!

Son is away until tomorrow- so will report back when he has a chance to test the game fix.
