ALDI Dog Food Julius Gold, Thoughts?

Hi All

Was in Aldi today and had a look at their Dry dog food, Julius ($7.5/4kg). States all natural ingredients. seems pretty good.

Grabbed one since dog food is running out at home. When I got back though, I had a search for reviews—pretty negative (poor meat ingredients, a lot of wheat/grain fillers). bit scary.

Tried any of these? What are your thoughts?
Also some suggested other brands albeit more expensive, dog eats far LESS so in long run cheaper than these supermarket ones. Is this true? Any recommendations?

Thanks

  • I just watched the movie the Green Room and they recommend a diet of young punk rockers for their dogs !

Have done quite a bit of research on pet food in the past, because of work and also because I own a dog. The dog rolls are v.good and actually if you look it about the same value as cans/dry food. The dry food has always been recommended higher by vets to me than canned food and helps their teeth better. Doing research in the past BARF (by Dr B) is very highly regarded (http://barfaustralia.com/) and not too exxy. Hills Science is generally sold and recommended by a lot of vets.

For me in terms of convenience (the good stuff is usually at Petbarn), I just buy Optimum or Purina Supercoat dry food when on special. Aldi had pallets of the Purina Supercoat on special a few weeks ago and bought quite a few.

We feed our dogs Black Hawk. It is the best. You don't need a lot and the dogs love it.

All dog food in a bag or can is absolute rubbish, its the human equivalent of eatting cardboard. Give your dog a choice between a bone and a steak compared to some processed nonsense and see which one they pick every time. Try and give your friend the food that has kept his ancestors fit and running for thousands of years, thats a true proven record of success, not some corporation.

  • I don't recommend grocery brand dog product. My dog was on it for 8 or so years and then switched her food to vet branded mature (Royal Canin). Coat, teeth and breath improved dramatically. Still kicking around after 16.5 years. She gets fresh chicken and half dog food.

  • It is A-Okay, I tried it myself. It is good stuff, better than Dog-O from coles.

  • remember when dog poop used to be white? what ever happened to that? was it because people used to feed their dogs lots of bones in the olden days?

  • I have switched to Blackhawk fish and potato (Pet o price match pretty good) + coles rspca drumstick (raw). Now even canned food gets "nah.." Dogs
