First PC Build and When Will The GTX 1080 Price Scalping Stop?

With tax time here and me jiggy with expectation of a somewhat decent tax return, (about $2000) I have decided that I want to build myself a first gaming pc. Now I have looked around and picked most of the parts I will be grabbing for it.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz
Motherboard: Asus Z170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Storage: Samsung Evo 850 Series 120GB 2.5"
(Have a 3TB WD BLACK and a 1TB Seagate 7200Rpm drives I will be using for main storage.
Video Card: Hopefully a GTX 1080 under $1000
Case: Corsair SPEC-03 Red ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNova 650W 80+Gold

I would like to now if this is good for a pc build as well as when the trend of price scalping for the GTX 1080 is due to end. This list roughly comes up to $2400 ($1100 without the 1080's current price) PCPARTSPICKER and while I am sure I could switch a few things around and haggle at a few pc stores I would like to be able to grab a GTX 1080 for under $1000.

do your self a favor and change this to samsung 850 evo 120gb

    • I was thinking the evo originally but didn't think there was such a difference. Pretty clear I should have check the bench marks. Thanks will do.

      • no worries
I have a 250gb evo 840 best money i spent for my pc.

btw i have that case awesome value i think.
I added two red led strips from aliexpress made it looks alot better.

  • Personally I would go with a 6700 non-K processor and save the money, if its your first gaming PC perhaps start with overclocking the GPU and see how you go, as you will get more gaming performance from doing that, than overclocking that already great CPU. Especially if you haven't bought a custom CPU cooler!

The powersupply you have listed is also great, but probably overkill unless you really plan to do SLI down the track. 450-500 watts would be fine for this build, but definitely still go for a solid brand name.

I've built a PC before in that case too, its great. Buy some cable ties to help with your cable management though!

    • I selected these parts to hopefully give me the best life for the build as I am hoping it will last at least 7 years. I don't think I will be over clocking it till it's third year to prolong life and will be going SLi with another card when it starts to struggle with ultra. I have also got a couple of 27 inch full HD screens I bought awhile back.

If you're overclocking correctly, I personally don't think you should have to worry about the lifetime of your parts at all.

I also appreciate wanting to have a long term plan for the PC, but if you try to buy 3 year old parts today, you will find they are much cheaper, so I generally recommend spending as little as you can, as a part that has a premium price today for being bleeding edge, will be cheaper tomorrow when its successor arrives.

You might find it cheaper to buy an upgraded cpu in a few years time, rather than pay for a bunch of water cooling components, fans and heatsinks. Its not a popular view among enthusiasts, but you actually could get away with using the stock CPU cooler and a cheaper non-K processor for now.

Either way is fine, its really just a personal choice. Not wrong either way.

        • Price isn't really a issue with this (though I am trying to get the best I can for around $2000) I don't really know how much over-clocking can prolong the life of a computer so I will look around and see if I can find a 6700 that is a good price.

7 years is a stretch. The best single GPU card in 2009 was a 1gb 5870, which isn't even remotely comparable to our current 4gb+ cards. 3-4 years would be more reasonable.

I bought a 4870x2 in 2008 and its still going solid. It actually annoys me that I havent found a reason to replace it yet, Given I dont play any of the latest high demand games and I dont have a UHD Monitor.

  • What kinda games are you planning on playing? Do you have a bomb diggity schizel monitor already? Because with a build like that you will want to max out the resolution.

    • I plan on playing minecraft, Don't worry I jest. Star Citizen is one that is currently coming to mind but in all honesty I want to play everything and considering the xbox play anywhere thing I think I will play a lot of them on this.

  • Bumping thread

    • Yet another shameless self bump

The builds fine, not sure what you are expecting from people. Like I said before, get a good monitor or you will be wasting all that power.
