Buying Old Aircraft Seats

Does anybody know where I can acquire a double economy seat from an aeroplane? In the US there are websites and warehouses full of old aircraft equipment, but I can't find anything similar in Australia. I want to build my own office chair and was thinking of using some bucket seats from sports cars, but aircraft seats sound a lot cooler. Surely the airlines dispose of their seats when they upgrade the cabins.

They're probably recycled when the plane is refitted, and not just kept in a warehouse.

Clearly a different story when they are retired and sent to the states to sit in Arizona forever and ever and ever.

Grays online should have some. Probably…

    Check around the Indian Ocean

      Too soon

      • The Mediterranean?

      • They need help with the search.

  • Go for the sports car seats

Old aircraft seats have the bum sat out of them by the time they are removed, unless you can find one of the ones Chumlee is talking about.

Try Qantas engineering in the Mascot Jet Base - I think their number is (02) 9691 7900. Of anyone in Australia, these are the most likely… But I'd think that aircraft refurbishments aren't done here. Actually I don't think they do all that much there any more.

You could also try Airflite on 08 9478 9000 however I suspect they will only have new seats to sell… But it might be worth a try to see if they have any unservicable / BER units.

Be prepared to spend an absolute fortune.

  • If it doesn't need to be a passenger seat it might be worth checking classifieds boards at the larger metro light airports (eg. Moorabbin in Melbourne).

You might well find someone renovating a Piper or Cessna, or an old plane that is good for parts only. Be prepared to pay a lot for something aircraft certified and in good condition, or possibly a lot of work reupholstering and renewing something that warranted removal.

  • Hmm, maybe stripping an old BMW M seat from the wreckers might work out better and cheaper

  • Also consider chairs for visitors.
Perhaps the RAAF may have some old ejector seats.
Would be handy to move on visitors who linger to long.

  • I ended up scoring a free ergonomically friendly office chair on scumtree :)

I'm still confused. You're don't have to be in an aircraft yet you voluntarily wish to sit on an economy seat?

May as well go all out with Bega cheese and cold dinner rolls to complete the experience. ;)
