Selling a Car - Rego?

I'm in NSW and looking to sell my car at the end of the year (worth $5k) but the rego is due in November. What is the expectation for car buyers, in regards to registration? I'd like to at least try and avoid paying for CTP insurance (will be pricey, as registered owner has an active demerit point), but you can't get rego without CTP.

Ultimately, the car is worth $5k and it seems less than ideal for me to spend $1k for another year of registration and CTP insurance for a car I am about to relinquish.

Or I could try and sell it before registration is due and perhaps the buyer would bargain a few hundred off the price to compensate, which would be fine.

  • Can't you just pay rego for 3 months?

    • That's what I was thinking, surely this can't be just a WA thing!

      • 6months is possible in NSW, not sure about 3.

selling a low value car with longer rego is easier though. Ultimately I'd be trying to sell it with rego before it expires.

the vehicle may only be worth $5k with a current rego. no buyer in their right mind would pay $5k + pink + green + rego.

Its November. The expectation is it can still be driven so you're good. Buyers factor rego in the price but it is unlikely you will get back money you spend on rego exactly back on selling price

I'll buy it for $1 without rego

    • Go back to gumtree.
