Ziplock Bags for Sous Vide

Hi all, I'm not trying to make this duplicate post.
As not everyone ready to buy vacuum sealer, this thread primarily will focus on ziplock-style bags instead of proper vacuum sealer.

Some options I've found. Please let me know your thoughts if you've tried these?
* Aldi recently has pre-cut sous vide bags. 30 bags for $15 I think. Clip into the side of the container instead of vacuum seal it.
* Some people on the internet recommend ziplock brand, did anyone found comparable brand in Australia?
* Is Aldi/Coles ziplock bags good enough?
* This Ikea bags have 2 seal and its BPA free. Not sure if the lining strong enough for sous vide?

Sous Vide on ziplock bags

Edit 1: This thread says Ikea bags are no good. Crossed out.

  • you can get zip lock branded bags from Costco.

    • Ah… Costco… I wish I had Costco near where I live

  • The Coles brand bags leak when used for sous vide

    • Just found that out! :(
36 hour/68 deg sous vide pork belly was too much!

But 1 hour/55 deg steak they worked ok.

  • I'm going to try Hercules brand, some people says it can be used for sous vide for couple hours.

  • I just had a thought after doing some research on using Ziplock bags for Sous Vide. Might be easier and give better results than the water displacement technique.

    Anyone tried this?
    1. Put the ziplock bag with food inside a "Space Bag" for storing clothes.
    2. Evacuate Air from the "Space Bag" AND the ziplock bag using a vacuum cleaner.
    3. Seal the Ziplock bag while it's inside the evacuated "Space Bag".
    4. Open the "Space Bag" and retrieve the sealed Ziplock bag.

    Costs:
$7 for a medium sized "Space Bag" from Big W or wherever.
Assuming everyone has a vacuum cleaner.

  • I know this thread is getting a little old but here's what I've tried:

    Woolies/Coles - leaks after a few hours
    Hercules - leaks overnight
Ikea - leaks overnight, even though seem much thicker and better quality than the others! Fine for a 2-3 hour steak cook.

Might end up getting a vacuum sealer but would love to hear if anyone has found any Ziplock bags that work.

  • Bump: Any updates on the best ziplock bags?

  • Bump: Does anyone know if generic vacuum food sealers can use foodsaver bags? I don’t feel like paying ~$180 for a food sealer but I don’t want to skimp out on the quality of the bags
