Australia Post Would Not Deliver to Apartments

I live in an apartment. It has a secure entrance and a intercom to call individual apartments.

Whenever there is a parcel delivery from Australia post they do not deliver to the apartment. They leave a card and drop the parcel at the nearest post office. They do not even attempt to buzz the intercom even for deliveries which require signature.
Usually some one is at home all the time. So I complained to aus post and they replied that it is their policy that they do not ring the buzzer in apartments. I could not find anything related to this in their term and conditions.

Could Australia post have such a policy and refuse delivery since its a apartment?
I always thought that we pay for delivery to the door.

This is causing issues as now we have to wait until weekend to get the deliveries from the local post office.

    odd thing as i live in an apartment and they ring the buzzer most of the time.

  • aus post policy ? no, now does the driver have their own policy maybe, it takes so much longer to deliver something to a apartment like yours than a house, so i could see someone who is paid per delivery to just card your/similar places, in no way am i saying it is right im just saying i can see it happening.

    If i was an auspost driver getting paid what they do I wouldnt be ringing the buzzer either. I believe it is expected that their deliveries take something like 30-90 seconds or something extremely short - having to answer a buzzer makes this process extremely long and they would not be able to complete all of their deliveries.

    There are a few countries in the world that dont even attempt to deliver parcels out to homes (not inc. mail) - this also boosts revenue at local post offices.

    You need to remember that final leg delivery costs account for a large portion of the costs compared to other components so they will strive to reduce this where possible.

    may be some couriers do this, but not a postal service like ap. the dc delivery managers and the pcbu are only allowed to ask the contractors to ring the intercom. they can't legally force the contractors.

    Aus post is retarded. They have different frigging policies between post offices and between individuals. I'm now stuck for 10 years with a passport photo where I don't have my glasses on because one post office absolutely refused to take photos of people with glasses on despite it being allowed, and contrary to what their call centre tells me is allowed.

      the lpo don't accept glasses because they don't want the dfat to refuse the photos. the last thing the lpo want is the customer coming back whinging about how the dfat didn't accept the photos and demanding a refund.

      If you usually cover your head for religious reasons, or you wear glasses or facial jewellery, your photo can include these items.

      Glasses or jewellery must not obscure any part of the face, especially the area around the eyes, mouth and nose. For this, photos of you wearing glasses with thick frames or tinted lenses are not acceptable. There must be no reflection from lenses, rings or studs.

      • They just flat out refused despite having glasses which fit the brief, and not having any signs anywhere stating that under no circumstances would they take a photo of someone wearing glasses.

        • you do know that you don't have to to get them taken at the lpo. try a pharmacy or even take the photos yourself.

      When you go through the automated passport control at Australian airports now, you have to take off your glasses so that the security camera can take a photo of you which is compared to your passport that is being scanned by the reader. You are unable to proceed through the security gates until you have done so. Problem is, once you take of your glasses you can't read the signs that tell you where to stand and what to do next!

  • I live in an apartment and the contractor NEVER attempts delivery. I also post about 15 packages per day with AP and most of our issues are with apartments. We recently had one go completely missing and AP has claimed no responsibility.

    It used to happen to us until I caught the guy and complained. Since then he's always buzzed. The postie who delivers the mail (not parcels) told me they're supposed to ring the buzzer and that I should make a formal compliant if they don't. If a government agency like Australia Post can afford to pay its CEO a $4.8m salary I think they can afford to pay their contractors enough to ring the buzzer (and maybe don't paste glib slogans like "Powering online delivery" on their trucks when they can't be bothered with the, you know, actual delivery).

    • My wife is at home with our 4 month old kid.
      So its on me to get it from the post office.
      Also we have one car and I drive to work.

    Auspost policy for delivery is to ring the door bell (which an apartment buzzer qualifies as) and wait at least 30 seconds for response.

    The other factor is that a postie on a bike can not let the bike out of sight. So, if the location of your buzzers is in a foyer, around a corner and the postie would have to leave the vehicle out of sight, they may not attempt the delivery.

    Now, having said that, our house (not apartment) doesn't have any of these issues. The front door and door bell is in clear view of the street, it is a level walk of only about 3m with one step up onto the front porch and there's always someone at home, within about 3-5m of the front door. Our front gate squeaks, so most of the time we open the door for the postie even before they reach the door bell. Yet, given all of that, about 1/3 of our deliveries end up at the post office and for those non-attempted deliveries we don't even get a card on the day of the supposed delivery. If we get a card at all, it is usually delivered by a normal postie (rather than parcel delivery driver) a day or so later.

    I've made several complaints to Australia Post over it and at one stage they actually had an internal investigation into the problem. They took it up with the distribution centre manager who had to get answers from the driver. Once they have gone through the process, their excuse was that the delivery was not attempted because on that day it was raining heavily and the driver did not want to damage the driveway with his vehicle. The problem with that was that the lie was too elaborate. I said to the person investigating this case that there is no driveway. She confirmed that by looking at Google Street View of our house and said that this was clearly a poor excuse and that they would take action.

    • I have made three complaints till now and there is an open investigation from the second one.
      On the third complaint the lady at the call center who I spoke to said that "We are not a courier company and for parcel deliveries we will not ring the door bell for apartments". I have a reference number for this call but I don't have this conversation on tape.
      This is why I want to find out if there is such a policy.

      Is it worth making a complaint to ACCC or any other place?
