Bing Lee declined to split transaction in multiple Amex cards.

Long story short, went to Bing Lee today to buy a new 4K TV ($1850) and was planning on pay with Amex to take advantage of the spend $300 get $50 back offer.

I actually have 6 registered Amex under my name and my wife's name, so I said I wanted to split the payment in 6 cards (in order to get $300 back). The saleswoman was a bit shocked and went straight to the manager to check if hey could do it, but came back and said they wouldn't allow because it was suspicious (WTF?) as they've had some incidents in the past.

I walked out of the shop in anger but in hindsight I should have asked to speak to the manager as this doesn't make any sense to me.

Question: Do they have the right to refuse this kind of transaction?

  • Why not just wait for the next 20% of sale, and pick up said tv from goodguys?

My 10yo tv just broke and with 3 toddlers home, I need a new TV asap. Bing Lee is also having a 10% discount for 4TV and I managed to get another 5% off plus free delivery so I would end-up spending $1320 on a $1900 TV. It was a meant to be a good deal.

Looks like you stole cards prob.

  • Do they sell gift cards at bing lee? If so, buy $300 cards with your 6 amex. Then pay the tv with the gift cards.

I proposed that and they said that they would have to take photocopy of my documents (driver licence) - I don't think this is even legal, is it? Like, do they have a documents retention policy (keeping it safe and disposing of)? I've never been asked this in the past so would be very reluctant to give. In the meanwhile I checked in the Amex offer terms and conditions and it says you cant buy Gift Card (although I've done this in other instances and the offer always apply, but this time it's a big ticket so don't to risk it).

I think as this may charge them more(base cost each transaction) .

Also if this one don't do it for you then go to another one who is willing to do this for you.

Plus let them know about Amex offer and they may understand what your intention is.

Question: Do they have the right to refuse this kind of transaction?

They have the right to refuse any kind of transaction (as long as they're not breaking any anti-discrimination legislation…which they're not).

    From the ACCC:

As a general rule, suppliers have the right to choose who they wish to deal with and there are many reasons why a supplier may refuse to supply goods or services.

    • Nice work, solved.

To be honest I think any TV over $1k really isn't worth it.

  • Could also be in breach of Amex policy? I'd probably refuse it too TBH

    • which policy?

        Thanks for the neg!

Amex policy with a store owner. I don't know but there could be something in the merchant contract relating to spreading bonuses over multiple cards. Amex has to pay for it so it would make sense.

  • Gift cards have always worked even T&C say doesn't work. Buy 2-3 GC today and tomorrow. Then buy the TV

  • There's lots of people who do this sort of thing with Amex. To someone not knowing, I can see that would sound suss. If you could have shown the manager that the cards are all yours and partner's name, it may have worked out OK. But, she may have needed to be there in person both of you holding your drivers licences to prove you are the card holders.

I agree, the store assistant may have thought you were going to use fraudulant credit cards.

anyone who would want to use more than a couple of cards would dodgy to me. Two cards, yeah the balance might be a bit low on one, three cards probably OK, but wary. Four? then you are looking at some sort of scam, legit scam or not!

  • It is not unusual. I bought a car across 3 credit card and they were all legit, (not a scam) and so was the vendor and so is the cc company. It happens.

  • where was this?
    should've bought gift cards first.
