  • Do you know your current line length or are you able to post line stats from the current modem? Different modem chipsets will be suited to different line lengths.

    • Mate hiw do i find that? Sorry i am not very tecnically proficient

      • Do you know the model of your current modem?

        • Belong modem

          Ok, well I can't find an instruction manual (it's a Sagecom f@st 4315 I think), so not totally sure on how to access the gateway config page and find stats without playing around a bit.

          For a rough estimate, go to http://adsl2exchanges.com.au/ and type in your address in the left hand side. Then, using the scale at the bottom right of the map provided, let me know the approximate distance.

          The 4315 uses a broadcom chipset, so it's going to be generally more stable and suited to longer lines.

          Line of sight distance: 1095m. Possible cable distance: 1800m.

          Okay, so you really have 2 options:

          1. You could go and get a standalone router like the TP-Link Archer C7 router for ~$125 and connect that to your current Belong modem.

          2. (What I'd probably go for)- spend an extra $20 and go for an Archer D7 which is a modem-router, saving a lot of hassle as far as setup goes.

          EDIT: Are you on ADSL or connected to the NBN?

        • @donnot:
          ADSL2+ actually. Thanks for your advise :) A quick question , why do I need a router? Would the normal modem not be able to provide wifi ?

          @misguided:

          In basic terms, the modem 'modulates and de-modulates' the signal from your phone line (ADSL) to give you internet access. It doesn't provide wireless/Ethernet.

          The router distributes that internet connection over Ethernet/Wi-Fi to connected devices. Your current Belong device is a modem-router.

          So to explain the first option I suggested in my previous comment, the Belong device would be acting as just a modem, and the Archer C7 would be acting as the router, but it can be troublesome to setup and maintain compared to option 2.

          Just quickly , I found out my belong modem version Technicolor TG797n v3 . Not sure if it is any good though.

          @misguided:

          Not great. It's just one of the cheap routers the ISP supplies you with, probably sufficient for most people with few devices connected to the network. The D7 (or just about anything) will be a massive step up as far as wireless performance goes.

        • @donnot:

          Thanks for that, I'll get my hands on the D7 one :)
