Getting Xbox One on Top of PS4 and PC

Hi guys,

Because of the recent Target $299 Xbox deal, I have impulsively purchased an Xbox One and I dont know whether I should keep it or return it. I have already had a PS4 and a reasonably specs PC (i7 skylake with DDR4 ram and GTX960 card).

What can the Xbox One offer on top of the PS4 and PC, both in terms of gaming and non-gaming (i.e. entertainment)?

Thanks in advance.

I was under the impression that most games on Xbox are playable on PC… even if it gets released a bit later. I'd say if you have PS4 and PC you're all set for gaming (except for maybe adding a wii u)

  • They are good media players, plays 10bit HEVC/X265. Later this year though, they'll have cross compatibility with the windows store apps which fingers cross means VLC and a host of other stuff.

I also like using my Xbox over the ps4 generally.

    • May I know the reason why you like using xbox more than ps4 and what do you use it for (apart from gaming, of course)?

      • Eh, I dunno. For gaming, pretty much every cross platform title is going to be slightly lower resolution with a slightly lower frame rate but I like the controller more… I'm just a fan boy I guess. Media player functionality is better. When there is a sale (on physical games), ps4 games always sell out first, Xbox has backwards compatibility with a lot of games, (we're getting Red Dead Redemption on Friday apparently!). I had a thread a while back about this, I'll post it underneath but someone said "there are benefits to being on the second place system of a company with deep pockets". Microsoft just seem to be trying harder. I feel bad for them that Tomb Raider came out the same day as Fallout 4, it was a really great game, even when I was playing it on 360 (got the Xbox One the start of this year).

    • I find it to be a shit media player, it can't handle some audio formats (I can't remember which but it's a common one coz I've witnessed it) and down mixes 5.1 to 2.0 and subsequently sounds like ass.

      *Edit:

Dts it can't handle, which is a popular format!

        • edit. To be fair to xbox, PS4 can't do DTS either

It won't decide or bitstream DTS in files but it decodes 5.1 AAC great for me. Definitely isn't mixing it to stereo because my amp tells me that its receiving 5.1 and I can hear sounding coming out of centre and front speakers. One thing that does suck though, if you play something with stereo audio, it still outputs 5.1 and the stereo signal just comes out the left and right speakers.

I still think it's better than the ps4 but at the same time, my $50 s905 based Kodi box is better than all of them.

        • Yeah I have to resort to the wdtv for media!

I have gaming pc and ps4 and don't feel a need to buy an xbox as you can get most xbox exclusives on pc such as rise of the tomb raider and quantum break.

id be putting that 300 into buying a new gpu like RX 480 or GTX 1070.

If you have an Xbox One on top of a PS4 and a PC it's likely to fall over quite easily. I'd avoid stacking them like this

  • You probably don't need both. I got my Xbox One about 18 months ago and have been constantly tempted to buy a PS4 with the perennial sales from Target etc, however there doesn't seem to be much reason to have both. I use mine for games, but also as a netflix/youtube machine. It's quite good for these, especially if you buy the snap on keyboard for the controller. The only exclusive stuff seems to be more timed exclusives over PC than anything (Rise of the Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, Halo - not sure if that;s coming out on PC though)

    I reckon return it.
