Modem / Router best option

Currently have adsl2 with no future nbn rollout here with an old telstra modem in bridge mode and using a TP Link wr841N (dd wrt) router.

Only 18months old but experiencing drop outs and having to do restarts on daily basis.

Looking for options; either leaving the old modem in bridge and getting a new standalone router or a modem/router combo

Currently have the router into a patch panel (4 devices ethernet connected)
2 chromecasts ipad and two phones wireless connected.

Whats my best bang for buck option? Tbh apart from my phones nothing is 5ghz compatible and the ethernet connected devices are a ps4 bluray player computer and tbox

Either go with ASUS DSL-AC68U, Netgear D7000 or TP Link Archer D9

The Archer D9 is the cheapest option at $200 dollars (when it goes on sale anyway — and it usually comes with some sort of reedemable freebie).

Also, if you just want a router and continue using your old crusty modem I'd recommend the ASUS rt-ac68u. This is a very good 'top of the pack' router that everyone is raving on about on WP.
DD-WRT is also supported but it is currently in Beta.

    • I have a D7 with the stock (current firmware), I never need to reboot it. Or at worst, weeks go by without rebooting it.

      • You can't install 3rd party firmware on most (if not all) modem routers.

DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Gargoyle and Tomato generally will only run on pure routers.

        • Edit seemed combative when I reread it.

  • If you're rebooting the router but not the modem, try a new firmware, either Tomato, OpenWRT or maybe there is a new version of dd-wrt
