Hawaii with Wife and 11-Month-Old Baby

Hello,

I'm thinking of going to Hawaii with my wife and my 11-month-old baby. Here are a few questions:
1. Do you think it's going to be difficult to visit tourist attractions with the 11-month-old?
2. If I do want to put the baby somewhere, do they have temporary child care services?
3. I'm planning to go off-peak, which is, apparently, from Sep to early Dec. I'm thinking late Nov and early Dec. Anyone with experience during that period?
4. How many days do you think is sufficient?
5. I've checked the price ticket, and it's approx $600/adult return. Is that normal or discounted?
6. Has anyone tried Clickie? Do you know if there are any Clickies in Hawaii?
7. Any other tips flying from Melbourne?

Thanks!

  • Hello

    1. Everything is more difficult than pre-child as you will be well aware
    2. Will depend on location. Maybe resort can cater
    3. Never been
    4. 1-2 weeks to make most of flight costs
    5. Don't know but sounds reasonable given it's ~900-1000 to LA return
    6. Never heard of Clickie
    7. Take entertainment for the child due to long flight

Have you considered a driving holiday in Australia?
In March we took our 8 month old daughter away for 3 weeks to South Australia from Melbourne.
We had a great holiday and rented accom through AirBNB. We made sure we stayed 2-4 nights in each location so packing and unpacking at each location wasn't a burden.

    Good luck.

It rains slightly more during that period of the year but its always sunny on one part of the island due to the mountains.
    its essentially good year round..

Best to go to Hawaii in the hotter months (like now).

It's a miserable place in the winter.

Sounds like tassie, but closer and cheaper ;)

Pretty sure it has always great weather, not like Aus

    1. you will miss out on several attractions / activities that you couldve easily done pre-baby. but you will still enjoy what Hawaii and their people have to offer.
    2. most concierge will be able to organise baby-sitting for you, though i wouldnt be exactly comfortable leaving my 11 month old baby with strangers in a foreign country.
    3. wife and i went in Dec/Jan, might get a bit of odd rain here and there, but overall beautiful and plenty of sun.
    4. depending on how many islands you plan to visit, roughly 7-10 days is plenty.
    5. we paid around 600/pp one way, so 600 return sounds like
      a good deal!
    6. never used clickie
    7. we flew from syd
  • $600/adult return

I think you should know that is a bargain

  • I went to Hawaii in March with my 3 kids. Paid $415 return (jetstar sale). Booked a room at the ambassador hotel in waikiki for 10 days. Buses are cheap and easy around the island. Waikiki beach (the actual beach) is pretty average (I live in bris and have the sunshine coast 30 minutes away and it is way better) it's like st kilda beach. Waikiki is pretty easy as a hang out location if you just dont want to do much. However heading out of Waikiki there are many great beaches and probably airbnb options would be a lot better for a couple (and baby). Car rental is cheap. 11 months is an OK age for travelling with a baby.

If I were to go there again then I'd stay in Waikiki for a couple of days and then get a rental car and book somewhere on the northside and just relax. Maybe do some trips to the hinterland - nice easy walks in beautiful forests.

  • We love Hawaii!

We went with 9 month old to India and Italy, honestly had a great experience
Mind you both India and Italy aren't kids friendly, lack of proper pedestrian crossing, fast drivers, scarce baby change rooms. But Hawaii isn't like that.

Hotel, shopping centre, car rental are pretty much similar to what we get here is Australia

I would suggest book a resort, hire a car, there are plenty of things that you can enjoy, I imagine you wouldn't enjoy if you do decide to leave kids with grandparents whilst you away.

There are beaches, cruises, shopping centre, food markets, ranches and many more.
Only things that you may have to do solo is all your water activities, but one can mind the kid on the beach and look, these are short activities anyways.

We went for ride in submarines, cant remember what was minimum age requirement, but I do remember there were lot of kids

Only thing, i wont recommend for kids is Big Island's active volcano site, sulphur is very high!

$600 - if it full fare flight, don't think twice, it a great price.

Do prepare for long flight, speak to GP what you can do from your kids perspective for long flight and any immunisation.

And do not forget travel insurance, ever in US !
