Converting IDR to AUD - bank or currency exchange?

Any ideas on best place to exchange IDR to AUD? I am guessing that bank rates are generally probably not the best? Would I just go to a currency exchange that doesn't charge commission? Thanks

  • How much money we talking about here?
If you are going to Indonesia, I recommend using citibank plus

    • I've just returned for indonesia and have some money left over. Its only 4,000,000 IDR - about $400

      • I went to Surabaya last time for a holiday (45 mins flight from Bali) and the food there is really nice and cheap

Anyway I went to these Private House that surprisingly is the Money Converter.
It have the best conversion rate after I done some research comparing one to each other.

If I remember it correctly from the business card, it's called "Lanina Valas" Authorized Money Changer.
Be sure to check them if you're planning to go there ;)

  • Generally speaking a specialist currency exchange will give you better rates than banks, but they may have a minimum fee-free amount (e.g. in the opposite direction, > $1000 AUD). They may also not deal with as many currencies (which may include IDR), so you may want to ring first.

Depending on where you live there are several options. TheCurrencyShop website breaks it down well but lists in terms of buying foreign currency (e.g. in Sydney, https://www.thecurrencyshop.com.au/best-currency-exchange-sy…), which is normally a satisfactory indicator of the inverse rate.

Since you're only dealing with ~$400, the benefits may be lost if you don't live or work in a CBD.
