Netflix Via a HDMI Cable

Hi

Can someone please explain why I can't seem to watch netflix on TV via a HDMI cable? Netflix is working ok on chromebook or windows laptop but shortly after as I plug it into the TV via a hdmi it stops. I can maybe get to 5 mins of movie. Don't think its the cable as I seem to be able to watch a movie saved on a USB via chromebook with hdmi cable.

Note TVs are budget TV's not sure if this is a problem. What is the best way to overcome this. Would I be better off with a chromecast?

Please help! Cheers and as always thanks.

  • What do you mean by it stops?

    a) The image on the TV goes blank and displays something along the lines of "No source / Input Signal"
    b) The movie playback pauses as if it were buffering but you are unable to resume play

The HDMI cable should be inconsequential to the playback on Netflix as the operating system handles the display output.

If I were to hazard a guess I'd say the device you are streaming from is dropping packets which would indicate an issue with your WiFi.

  • Thanks for your reply

What I mean by stops its that b) it pauses and then does nothing.

We are NBN but live rural so its a satelite dish on roof. Netflix plays fine when just on chromebook / ipad no buffering or stopping.

We just use the modem that came free from iinet, would a better modem solve the issue.

Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

    • Seems very odd. Is the distance from the modem/router to the TV greater than your tests with just the iPad/Chromebook? Or are there more walls between the TV and modem/router?

      • The modem is right next to one of the Tv's, the other TV is in the bedroom so signal has to go through an internal brick wall but both ipad / chromebook work with netflix in that room.

I remember it was working when we first got it but not for sometime and hubby and I have ended up watching different movies on our own devices in different rooms!

It certainly is a mystery to me

  • Without getting too technical there are reported issues with [HDCP] and certain Chromebooks. Try the Windows laptop instead else I'm at a loss to explain it.

    Netflix Chromebook Setup

To watch Netflix on your Google Chromebook, follow the steps below.

    Navigate to Netflix.com.
Sign in to your Netflix account if you're not already signed in.
Play a movie or TV show.
A yellow bar will appear requesting permission to store data on the computer.
    Select OK.

Do you get the yellow bar? … Perhaps clear your browsing history in case you accidentally selected "no" at some point.

  • Righto thanks I will try that. I don't get a yellow bar.

I did try a movie on my widows 10 laptop but think I got an error code so might look this up and do some more investigation with netflix troubleshooting.

Thanks again and have a nice evening

  • I was going to suggest maybe your computer is going to sleep half-way but sounds like that isn't it
