Car Hire in Hobart? or Public Transport Is Better?

We are travelling to Hobart for 2 nights and considering Car hire but worried about dodgy practices by some companies charging for unnecessary things ( fuel charge, claiming Top excess for minor/negligible damages etc).

Other option is taxi, shuttle bus for a piece of mind but can be expensive (fare).

Do you know any good car hire company ( Hertz any good?) ?

I'm planning 4 nights at Hobart next month. You could easily do 2 nights without a car, using ferries (Mona), bus (Port Arthur etc), airport shuttle, taxi, etc. Depends on what you plan on doing.

I used Budget last time I was down there but this mob are cheaper and the reviews look ok.

Planning on going outside of the Hobart CBD/City? If you are then car hire is probably a good idea as everything is spread out, but 2 nights shouldn't be a problem.

Public transport consists of expensive taxis and unreliable Metro buses full of bogans.

What clear said. Public transport is fine if you are only traveling in the city or suburbs, but if you want to get out and see stuff you need a car. Taxis are outrageously expensive and we don't have uber either :(

Get a hire car from Hobart Airport, shuttle bus is pretty expensive there as well. Can't help you with an opinion about what company to use sorry.

Yeah, europcar tasmania doesn't have any reputation left (https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/former-europcar-franch…)

we hired a car in hobart last year for a long weekend, it was pretty cheap - only about $150 for 4 days/3 nights, though it was only a tiny tiny micra. Was enough to get out to port arthur and back plus around town. I think I used a link from my professional association to get a discount. Entertainment book also has some coupons. If you have a credit card that has car hire excess reduction, make sure to use that too.

  • thanks everyone for your time and valuable input.

I am now leaning towards car hire option, now need to find value for money ( plus with reduced excess).
Also, looking to get domestic travel via 1cover' link: http://goo.gl/7Crggj ( quoted $35 for 2 nights stay)
This is to cover higher excess amount, as am not able to verify from my credit card provider (due to weekend and pdf is not that detailed).

I got ANZ Black Card, and Amex Platinum Edge..

I will be checking Hertz/Budget / rentalcars site.. Came across Redspot car hire, quoted 140$ (top dog tier)
