AmEx Referral Bonus across Card Types

Just wondering if anyone knows how the AMEX referral bonus works if the referee wants a different card to the one the referrer holds? E.g. Is the number and type of points that they will each get dependent on the card type the referee applies or the one the referrer hold?

Also, does applying for a card through a referral means that they referee miss out on the publicly available bonus points for non-referred applicants?

My understanding is that you can only refer people to the same card that you have. I have two different cards and two different referral links. The person referred gets whatever it says in the link they click on. If there is a better deal elsewhere, they should use that one.

  • How do you obtain your referral link?

    I have NAB premium Velocity.

    • Only Amex issued cards I'm afraid

It's generally what yoyo 6 says above however the "referrer" may have access to also refer cards within the same "family" as theirs - eg Amex platinum (the exxy $1,200 pa card) can also refer the platinum edge and platinum charge (but not velocity platinum or the equivalent Qantas card). They need to just look down the left hand side within their referral page before sending their links.

Source: friend who has the platinum card and referred me to the platinum edge last week

  • Has the minimum spend for AMEX Velocity Escape card changed from $300 to $750?

Had sent a referral to a friend and its now showing up as $750 minimum spend 🤔

    • As far as I know, this was since 2 months ago when I started looking.
