Should I Wait to Buy an Xbox One Elite Controller or Pay $170?

I want to buy one but the best price I can find is $170 delivered on eBay after checking

Microsoft Store
Amazon (all countries)
JB Hifi
EB Games
Target
BigW
Staticice (AU)
Newegg

Most places don't even have stock other than console bundles.

I note that its been down to at least $142 on here.

Do you think I should wait for a better price?

  • Also might as well ask: if I bought an Elite console bundle how easy do you think it'd be to sell the console on eBay sans controller and have the net price work out better in my favour?

I would wait for a bit because there is now a base controller that comes with Bluetooth and Xbox connection and a few other tweeks so they most likely refresh the elites also soon

      I don't think so.
I think there will be three controllers in total:
Xbox One, Xbox One Elite, Bluetooth Xbox (for XBS and Scorpion)

The Elite is the better controller.
But it doesn't pair with PCs unless you use a cable.
The new controller pairs to PC's using Bluetooth… just like the PlayStation DS3 and DS4 controllers.

      • Why do you think MS won't take the upcoming controller and Elite-ify it?

        • There's just nothing in it for them.
The regular Xbox One, and Xbox One Elite controllers already work for the Xbox One S.

Its just another R&D, and expenses they don't need.

But Bluetooth is what it should've been from the start. Not they're proprietary standard. Same goes for the proprietary HD-DVD drive they tried to push forward with the 360.

I personally like open/controlled standards, it breeds competition…which means better products at better prices.

        • @Kangal: Fair enough.

Couple things to add: bluetooth =/= open. There aren't many (any?) PS3 or PS4 wireless controllers using bluetooth. And the HD-DVD with 360 wasn't proprietary, MS just bet on the wrong team during the bluray vs HD-DVD wars.

        • @StickMan:
          Yeah, you're right about that.
I just meant in terms of an ecosystem. There's plenty of official and non-official accessories (headsets, controllers, mice, keyboard, etc etc) that work on the PS3/PS4, but far less on the XB1 because they require Microsoft's authentication.

I think they were using a 2.4GHz Wifi direct radio connection.

    • Didn't know that a refresh was coming but I can't see anything solid at the moment about a BT Elite version when I did a cursory search.

There are some limited edition Elite controllers that you can preorder but they don't mention BT:

      https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.3428528300?icid=US_E3_ModC_2Mystic_E3_61316&tduid=(a36792b1ed5f5ba5e89d6cce53184ba7)(259740)(2542549)(d_wp)()

There's actually a "large" (meaning meaningless to most people unless they play multiplayer - maybe) delay with BT controllers so it doesn't seem like a path I'd expect for the Elite controller.

I'm not sure if it carries over to Xbox wireless controllers but Wifi-Direct halves the BT delay (according to Nvidia who sell Wifi-Direct Shield controllers).

  • I guess it depends on how desperate you are to get one. Chances are good you'll get one cheaper sooner or later. Maybe one of those eBay sales or something.

The one down to $142 was "as new" fyi. Which means it wasn't actually new.
