ROM Help Needed for Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro

Hi guys. Recently I purchased a Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro from AliExpress and am having the worst time with the UI. It seems like a worse version of IOS which for me defeats the purpose of going with Android. Now the actual phone itself, hardware wise, seems great for the price and I want to be able to use it so here's the main point of this post.
Has anyone had any experience with installing something like Cyanogenmod on one of these phones. I've been searching google since yesterday morning and what I can see is that Xiaomi have some kind of lock on the bootloader which you need to apply for to get unlocked I suppose. I haven't really gone into this thing before, at least with phones, and I have no idea what to do. I just need a step by step guide as to what to do.

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction otherwise I'm going to try returning the phone which seems like a nightmare in itself.

  • I bought the same phone and it came without the official MIUI rom. Took me about 4 hours to figure out, but I used instructions in an official MIUI thread and a Youtube video about how to install the official rom on a Redmi Note 3 with a locked bootloader. Between the two I somehow figured it out.

I think these are links that helped me:

But I don't know about cyanogen. I find the MIUI is okay, just took a little getting used to. Maybe just get a launcher like Nova Launcher?

    • Thanks for the links I'll have a look now. I even tried to use the Google Now Launcher but the phone didn't seem to allow it, like no matter what it wouldn't come up as a possible launcher. That's why I'd like to go the more overall route of changing the entire phone's software.

  • Make sure you apply for the unlocked bootloader thru miui. It can take up to 10 days. The rest is easy, plenty of good roms coming out.

    • Cheers mate, with the King Flasher tool someone said you don't need unlocked bootloader. Do you know if this is true?

      • These guides are for the Redmi NOTE 3 Pro, is that the phone you have OP? Because I have the non-Note Redmi 3 Pro and have found Note ROMs do not tend to work on it.

        • I have the normal version, not NOTE.

        • We're in the same boat then. Unfortunately I've not found a CyanogenMod ROM for our phone model - all the good ROMs appear to only be released for the Note version.

I'd be very happy to be proved wrong.

      • I haven't used the tool so I can't comment on it. I know there are ways to unlock the bootloader unofficialy, but I played it safe and went thru Miui website. CM13 runs really well on the phone if you don't enjoy the stock software.

  • I'm in the same boat. Bought a 3 Pro in a bit of haste, and now after reading up wish I had got the note instead. It only took 2 days to get the bootlocker unload approval…now just waiting for the phone to arrive
