Chromecast Audio, or alternative?

I want to be able to 'cast' the audio on the various phones in my house to a couple of different sets of speakers.
We have both Apple and Android devices and a large amount of music on the device local storage, we use a range of music apps, plus Guevara, Youtube and other streaming services.
We'd like to be able to keep using our preferred apps rather than a specific casting app, if possible.
The $5 bluetooth to Audio-in devices don't work well, and the Bluetooth speaker we have is OK, but you forget you are streaming and walk off to do something and the audio drops out when you go to another room, so probably a wi-fi based solution is better?

Open to suggestions/recommendations or ideas. Would prefer a solution that allows us to use any speaker set, rather than built in to devices.
Thanks

  • Chromecast audio is probably the easiest to set up.

If you have all your music on a central server or NAS that opens a few other options. I've been using logitech media server with a couple of raspberry pi and android devices plugged into cheap amps but it's difficult to integrate google play/youtube into something like that. The chromecast audio can run a Logitech Media Server player. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Logitech_Media_Server for more info.

  • I have a spare Raspberry pi, a spare wifi dongle and some old computer speakers lying around. It was a Gen 1 Raspberry pi, which is pretty much too slow to do anything useful. I put this software on it:http://www.pimusicbox.com/

and it is now my wireless music player.

On my phone, I downloaded BubbleUpnp app to stream music to it. Works kinda well. Not perfect, but I can manage the quirks.

Edit: Btw, I play music from my Google Play music subscription, but you can pretty much send anything to it.

  • Chromecast Audio + Plex

  • For Android BubbleuPNP with audio cast (requires xposed)
