How often do you change your water filter?

The water filter light turned red on my fridge indicating the 6 month old water filter needs changing (at $60 for a filter).

Got me thinking about whether it actually needs replacing or is it the manufacturer trying to squeeze more out of me to buy their branded water filters…
Water tastes the same to me and water flow hasn't noticeably reduced..

How often do you change yours?

What water filter? I use tap water.

    • I find tap water in Sydney has become disgusting ever since they decided to mix in recycled water. 20 years ago it used to taste better than bottled water.

Nowadays its filter + boiled only for me.

    • My fridge has an ice and water dispenser. It needs to have a filter installed for it to push any water through.

But I get your point. ;)

We change the Brita AC (Activated Carbon) filter every 2-3 months. Straight out of the tap there is a strong chlorine smell that the AC seems to be really good at getting rid off.

We have a cheap TDS meter off ebay and interestingly enough the filtered water doesn't have a lower TDS reading. However the rain water out of our tanks seem to have a lower TDS reading than even our filtered drinking water!

  • We have a stand alone water filter decanter that uses ceramic filters. I wash the filter every month, and so far it's lasted 14mths.

  • Thanks for the votes/comments. Going to just reset the light and wait another 6 months. ;)
