PC build advice form OzB due to motherboard failure

Hi Guys
My Computer died. I was playing Automobilista, paused it, when I went back it had shut down by itself. I thought it was the PSU that died, did a few tests, got a new Thermaltake 650W from MSY only to realise that it was not the PSU, and that probably was the Motherboard. Anyway decided it's not worth investigating more - since the comp is 5/6 years old I'll get a new one so I can play Assetto Corsa, Automobilista, F1 2014/15… yeah I know ony good with steering wheel (not a spring chicken anymore ;))
So here is what I have in mind after a week or so reaserching and pricing - would appreciate any advice.

Main question is, will these parts work well together and allow me to play those games, and support three monitors (BenQ 23", not the best ones but they came for free)?

TOTAL: $1.373 all (except the Case) from PC Case Gear

I had the Intel Core I7 6700K to start off and everything else accordingly but it was getting over the $2000/$2500 so i had to reduce the costs a bit, the missus wasn't all that happy :(

Any advice/suggestion would be greatly appreciated

I don't know what it means, but /g/ talks about an 8gb meme?

What? forgive my ignorance but I don't understand what you're saying

  • +3

    You're buying a previous-gen processor — Haswell instead of 6600K skylake
    You're buying a previous-gen DDR3 memory instead of DDR4
You're buying previous gen GTX 980 instead of 1070

    Re-do your build from scratch!

    • Thank you scrimshaw didn't realize I was building somethig 'old', will follow instructions and rebuild :(
      Much appreciated

      • Remember with 6600K, while it is cheaper tha the 4690K by a good 30 dollars, it actually doesn't come with a CPU cooler. It's BYO.

        • Yep I read that, and that's why I went the I5 4690K way, it comes with one. not sure how hard it is to put fan on, or am i getting confused with the CPU on the motherboard. never build a rig before (MSY build it for me last time)

        • @BruOz:

um, the stock CPU fan with the 4690K is very basic, and it also requires you to put it on the motherboard yourself anyway.

In either case, you need to buy a decent cooler. And if you are building it yourself you will also need to install the cooler.

    • Sorry I have just realised I didn't specify I wasn't going for the best possible build with an unlimited budget - I guess I should have asked whether there are better options within the same budget - ie roughly $1400-1500. In other words, is this good value for the money?

  • Id go the 1060 over the 980, comparable performance and you save $100. I assume you already have an SSD

  • Hi cypher67, will do too bad pc case gear don't have it, appreciated the info

    • Nobody in Australia has 1060 yet.

      http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=gtx%201060&…

The embargo is supposed to lift at 9AM American time, as for stock availability it might be end of this month or early next.

      • Oh lawd

        dat price

        It's insane

      • PCCG has now emptied out that category. They must have posted by mistake.

How much were the cards? I'm interested in 1060.

        • There still there.

          They are both $499

imo they are a complete rip off.

Better to go RX 480 Or stretch budget and get a GTX 1070 for $600 as it's been posted on ozbargain.

        • @Axelstrife: They came back about 11 pm, apparently when the embargo ended.

Yep that's a rip. I'll wait a bit for the prices to drop. In no hurry.

    here you go mate

The choice for you for gpu would be from the following.
    R9 390x $359
GTX 1070 MSI $679 ebay sale
Theres also the gigabyte version for $10 less.

Maybe an RX 480 but it's more expensive then the 390x and slightly less powerful but also uses alot less power then the 390x.

My personal opinion would be to go for the GTX 1070 considering it's only 179 more then the GTX 1060.

    • GTX 1070 MSI back to $859 :(

      • That's the price before the 20% off deal which is currently available with select Tech retailers on Ebay. The price is actually $687.20 which is a good deal but not amazing. Occasionally a good deal pops on the Amazon US store for higher performing 1070 graphics cards for ~600-620 AUD.

EDIT: The Ebay code for the 20% off deal is CTEC20 at checkout.

        • Yep it's apart of the current ebay 20% off selected stores

My mistake on the price I must of did the 20% off for the $849 card which i personally think looks ugly.

  • Thank you Axelstrife, that is awsome, really appreciate. I will have a good look at your suggestions

    • Btw you could save some money buy buying some parts of ebay other then the gpu.

      Can save money like
      $19 from the cpu
      $39 from ssd

      Good luck.

      • Thanks Axelstrife, just put all in the cart and it's not bad at all (minus the HD and the PSU which I have) with the GPU from ebay comes down to $1460 which is pretty good :)

        • Very nice.

If those three screens are 1080p then that card will easily max out ANY game. i think it will max any game at 1440p aswell.

        • @Axelstrife: yep they do, they're probably a few years old but they'll do :)
          thanks gain mate

  • I was thinking the PCCG Xeon V5 Gaming Bundle for $599 would be ideal for you if you have a graphics card already or are buying one.

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35929/pccg-xeon-v5-gamin…

Comparable performance to a 6700 and has ram, mobo and the cpu. Uses a Xeon so not an overclocker but is using the latest cpu architecture and doesnt have onboard gpu (which means you NEED a card).

I am on the fence for buying this bundle myself, so I'd thought you might like it.

    • Hi gagiman, that looks good but I'm not sure that i wan a xeon built, no valid reason…just feeling :/

  • Ok so here is the revisited build

    *Case: same as above
    *CPU: I6 6600
    *Motherboard: ASRock Ftal1ty H170
    *RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V series F4-2133C15D-8GVR 8GB DDR4(2x4)
    *GPU MSI GeForce GTX1070 8GB 4K
total so far $1480 (with the GPU at $779 from pc case gear, hope to get it from ebay at a lower price), can stretch the budget a bit more but not too much

any feedback/suggestions really welcome, also on a scale 1 to 10 how difficult it it to put it together by myself (never don it, but can find my way around a computer)
    Thank you guys

EDIT:total $1312 (GPU $680 ebay), can spend some more money on the Motherboard.. any suggestions?

    • When I made my very first build I forgot to put the copper standoffs they supply in the case and my computer wouldn't start, don't forget those.

For me it build was like so

1: Install the cpu and cooler and ram BEFORE I put it into the case (installed while on cardboard box)
2: Place the PSU in case and screw in
3: Place the motherboard io shield and standoffs
4: Place Motherboard in and screw in
      5: Graphics card
      6: cabling

awesome gagiman, really appreciated, I'll print this out… finger crossed I hope not to f*** up anything
        cheers ;)

        • or you can print the more detailed instructions from here

          Pointers before starting your build:

          • Wash your hands
          • Start in a clean dry space with good light
          • Layout all your parts on a flat surface
          • Leave the CPU in its protective cover until ready to install
          • Put on your static bracelet or properly ground yourself on the PC case
          • Do not build your PC on carpet

  • Thank you matabuntu, really appreciated, I need all the info that I can get my eyes on. Watching a lot of youtube videos on the subject
still not sure about the motherboard though, haven't pulled the trigger on that one yet

  • Merged from PC Build Advice Form OzB Part2

Ok guys, with the help of some Ozbarganiers such as scrimshaw, axelstrife, gagiman, matabuntu etc. this is where I am now (see below) but let's say that I could stretch the budget close to $2000, what could or should I absolutely upgrade (please have patience, first built and trying to get it right)
All parts so far from PC Case Gear

    • Intel Core I5 6600 - $319
    • MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8GB - $779 (note the one sold on ebay by PC byte it's not clear if it is a Gaming X, sent email for confirmation before buying)
    • Kingston HyperX Fury HX421C14FBK2/8 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 Black - $69
    • ASRock Fatal1ty H170 Performance Motherboard - $159
    • Corsair Carbide SPEC-03 Mid Tower Gaming Case - $85
    • Elastic Anti-Static Wrist Strap - $7

    Total $1418

    • IME your default store should be MSY because they're usually cheapest. Also PC Byte have failed to deliver a ton of stuff for a lot of people but MSY are still cheaper on at least CPU (308 last I looked).

But at the moment Techmi are doing i5-6600 for $282 delivered (the site looks terrible but I've made one order successfully and seen no complaints yet regarding this store) which is the best price now AFAIK.

Also I think anti-static's are pointless, never used one, yet to zap anything in 20 years.

      • Thanks Diji
yep I looked at MSY, but more that once what I want is out odf stock, but you are right the CPU I5 6600 is $306, if you could post the full address of techmi I could have a look, the anti-static wrist is just peace of mind, never used it either when I was mucking around my pc, but a new expensive build is different… at leats for me

    • Firstly, I'd go for a decent power supply. The EVGA Supernova G2 750W is a great power supply. Comes with 10 years warranty as well.

I'd also go for a more expensive case. Makes the PC look a lot better, allows for more space/better cooling and cable management. Cases are a bit subjective, but my choice would be the NZXT H440. Available in different colours. The Phanteks tempered glass cases are also quite nice, but there isn't much you're getting for the extra cost.

16GB RAM is also nice since RAM is so cheap nowadays. Good to have both now and into the future. 16GB HyperX Fury 2400MHz Kit. You can be a lot more careless with chrome tabs :).

Other than that, everything else looks decent.

If you wanted, you could get an i5 6600K and pair it with a nice cooler and a Z170 motherboard for overclocking, but that's probably going a bit far, especially if you're new to building.

      • Hi donnot, I have a power supply, thermaltake 650W bought when I was thinking that my comp had a dead PSU, turn out it's probably the mobo, so that will do, I'll have alook at that case you mentioned, I didn't particularly liked the corsair spec 3, but it is cheap. The I5 6600K would be nice, how much better is it compared to the I5 6600? is it really worth the upgarde? an ASrock Z170 is duable
        thanks for the feedback

        • The only difference between the 6600 and 6600k is the K model allows overclocking. For overclocking, a motherboard using the Z170 chipset is required.

If you're overclocking, you'll need a new CPU cooler, and I don't really think it's worth it at the moment but if you can justify it (perhaps for the future), might be worth considering.

          • @donnot: yeah, don't know, I'll think about it, much appreciated
