Build Advice for first build!

Hi guys,

First time building a PC and after about 100 hrs watching how-to videos I think I'm ready to pull the plug!

CPU: I5- 6500 Quad-Core
GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 450 8GB
Mobo: Asus H170-PRO ATX LGA1151
Ram: Kingston HyperX 16GB DDR4
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212x
PSU: EVGA 500W 80+

I'm looking to see if there are any substitutes I can put in to lower the cost ( if not, that's ok!). I do know that the 390 edges the 480 on some benchmarks, but I figured I'd go for a newer gen GPU.

Thanks for your help

  • Looks good.

    Don't change anything.
That cpu cooler isnt really necessary i have a I5 6400 with stock cooler working fine doesn't look the best but I don't feel the need to go spend cash on a cooler i don't need. can always do it later if needed anyway.

    you have a pc case?

    • Hi!

I don't have a PC case as of yet. Any recommendations?

I personally like the Fractal Define series. The panels are lined with noise dampening material and comes with 2 silent fans. Doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner on those hot summer days.

      • Phanteks P400s. Awesome value for money with killer features and really easy and fun to build in. Plus you can add RGB led strips that tie in with the case LEDs for only $30 or so.

      • Case choice is a very subjective thing based on your personal preferences. I really hate the big towers and if I were building a new PC, I'd be trying to make it as small as possible.

        For example: http://silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=533

        • Personally I'd go either m-atx or mini itx case, but the op has already selected an ATX size Mobo which is why I suggested the p400s since he asked for recommendations. It's a great all rounder case with integrated 3 speed fan controller, rgb lighting options, cool, silent, good looking (IMO) and easy and fun to build in.

You can happily ditch the cooler to save cost. You'll get an Intel one in the CPU box, and it's perfectly up to the task.

  • Looking good. What are you planning to do as far as a HDD or SSD? Or do you already have that.

As far as the GPU, definitely worth getting the RX 480- uses far less power than the 390 and current driver updates are showing ~3% performance improvements already.

I'll go against what is being said and say that it's worth getting the 212X. It's such a small expense and will significantly lower the fan noise under load and keep the CPU a lot cooler. Once it hits summer and/or dust builds up, it's going to need to work a lot harder.

    • I do have a Samsung SSD in the works.

I'm not going to be playing at max settings all the time, so not sure if I'll need the cooler or not. But, then again, with summer, it may be a worthwhile consideration.

If that's the only cost cutting I'm looking at, I may as well just get it in case!

      • If you dont OC, you dont need a cooler. Just use the stock one it will be more than enough. If your case have good ventilation, there is nothing to worry about. Moreover, most games are more GPU dependent. Save the money for an SSD instead.

The main benefit to a different cooler is the better noise performance. I replaced the stock cooler on a secondhand 3770 with a Hyper 212X and it's remarkable how much difference it makes in terms of noise level. I'm one of those people who would sacrifice a bit of performance for a near silent pc though. Pump and fan noise seems to annoy me more than most people.

        • @nytrojen:

I agree with everything you've said - an aftermarket cooler will probably be a bit quieter. But the stock cooler is (IMO) already acceptably quiet and in a decent case, it's unlikely to be a big issue.

There's no reason that OP can't replace the stock cooler with a quieter one at some later date, if he finds that it's too noisy. Buying the 212X now without trying the "free" stock cooler seems a bit silly to me.

@klaw81: True that, just mentioning that for me the biggest benefit of an aftermarket cooler isn't the cooling performance, but rather the improvement in noise

          @nytrojen:

I got a skylake i5 6600 cpu with stock cooler. It is almost silent. As such my recommendation.

  • Agree with what others have said, ditch the cooler. The stock is fine. It's even good for mild overclocking. If you're worried about the summer heat, youd be way better off putting the money you'd have spent on a CPU cooler towards a quality case. Get one with two or three fans.

  • If you are looking for a good value case with excellent air and noise management then you should look at the NZXT S60 or, for a little bit more, the H440. Great cases and you don't need an optical drive in today's world (or can get an external USB obe)

  • Oh, and similarly, if you are looking for an after market cooler then check out the NZXT Kraken X30 or X60 (and no, I don't work for or sell NZXT products!). Although, I agree with the other posters that stock will work fine
