The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve 700mL $45 (Usually $62) @ First Choice Liquor

110

Usually $62. Now $45

The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve, selecting whisky from a variety of traditional aged oak casks. Then, to lend a modern twist to the flavour of the expression, Master Distiller Alan Winchester has married together a selection of the aged oak casks and American first-fill oak casks. First-fill casks are those that have never before been used to mature whisky. In the process of making The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve, selective use of these casks provides a smooth, creamy sweetness that mingles harmoniously with the delicate flavours and complex fruity tones already present in the whisky.

The result is an exceptionally well-balanced and smooth single malt. To the nose there are delicate aromas of citrus fruit, and the palate is sweet, with notes of oranges and pears, and hints of toffee apples and candy. The long, creamy, smooth finish makes this a deliciously satisfying dram.

    It's currently $44 at Dan's.

    Reviews don't look good though.

    • that is weird. I searched DM and it wasn't there. hhhmmmmm. I've bought this whisky previously and quite enjoyed it. but whisky, like wine, women and song, is very individual.

      • It was previously $49.95 before the price beat.

I must say, I used to love Glenlivet 12 (I've since moved onto nicer things).

Founders reserve, I tried it a few months ago, and thought it was horrid. Even without having moved onto nicer stuff, I believe I would still say its poor.

      • No age label. Rep from the Glenlivet stand at an expo I went to said average age is ~3 years.

      • What have you moved onto too im in the same boat and dont really rate the founders reserve

        • My standard well-priced that I will have straight or mixed is Jura Superstition. $75 at Dans ebay last time I checked, and I've been paying either $71 or $81 (can't remember) prior.

The other stuff is whisky night kinda stuff, where we'll pop $150-$250 on a bottle.

This is not to be confused with their old 12yo whisky which was quite good for the price. This is a new blend and is decidedly average. It's a $35 whisky in disguise.

agree with the other comments, it's really an average whiskey, 12yo is much better IMHO!

    Agree with YOTR.

Get monkey shoulder at this price.

    • Absolutely! Love those blended malts and Monkey Shoulder is a great example of what a blended malt can be.

    • Agree! Monkey Shoulder is great.

    • Actually I find that half the time I really enjoy monkey shoulder, the other half I really don't like it. No idea why.

      • Could be different batches?

        • Could be. Or oxidation? Or mood :)

    • yeah, monkey is actually a blend of three single malts, it's pretty good :)

  • Check out the reviews on DM… based on those you would not go near this even at a $30 price tag! This Master Distiller Alan Winchester should be ashamed to have his name associated with this one… and should be now unemployable anywhere in the whisky industry.
