International Calls

The Mrs needs to make an international call. This is the first time we've had to make one since getting married. We have a fixed line for ADSL. What's the cheapest way of making a rare international call?

Does anyone use phone cards? What's the cheapest way to do this?

What about mobile plans? It would seem silly to change a plan for one international call?

This is the first time we've had to make one since getting married.

She didn't warn you about this before getting married? :)

What country? Does the other end have a computer or smartphone? You could use Skype for free.

    • This is most likely a one off situation. China. I don't think Skype is an option.

      • Still consider using Skype to ring a regular landline or mobile. To China it is only 2.1c/min and 5.3c call connection.

      • Another possibility is if you are near an Aldi, to buy a $5 starter kit. Calls to China, landline and mobile, are 10c/min, so 50 minutes talk time. Not the cheapest but may be convenient.

What mobile services do you have? A lot of prepaid & plans these days include credit for occasional international calls.

    • Unfortunately not; corporate plan doesn't allow this. Personal ones don't have allowance for international call.

  • Look into buying an ALdi or Amaysim SIM card. The prepaid international call rates are cheaper than domestic rates in some cases

  • If you have any Optus or Voda plan, they might be able to add a one-time pack for intl calls as an add-on to your monthly bill.

  • many mobile planned already include Intl calls? or optus daily plus gives you calls to China at 3cents per minute

  • Amayasim Prepaid is free to china pretty sure as part of all their unlimited plans.

Smallest plan seems to be 25 dollars, and its prepaid so can just use it whenever?

(I've never used amaysim so may have to check for any tos) but could just stick in the sim card to your phone whenever you need to make an intl call.

  • get tpg approx 500 minutes including china.you will need it.i am married to a chinese lady.10 dollars a month for six months then twenty .cancell any time but you wont

  • Get a Go Talk card from 7-11. End of story.

Skype Out. Allows you to call from the internet on your side to a normal phone/mobile on the other side where the person has no possible internet access.
Simple, quick, cheap for a once off call. No plan needed.

Assume you have a smartphone or a computer seeing you mentioned you have ADSL.

And are you totally sure the person in China cannot even go to an Internet cafe? Then your call would be free (via Skype etc) and all they need to pay is a dollar or so for the internet cafe.

    • I concur. Also, there's Hangouts. Call quality is great. Although, I don't think they do landline calls outside of the US.
