Any Advantage In Getting Car Serviced At Toyota Dealership ?

We have a 2007 Camry and we have had logbook servicing done at a local mechanic (the car was out of warranty when we bought it).

Are there any advantages in getting it serviced at a Toyota dealer, such as computer updates, etc?

Hey mate i would say no at all except it may look better if you keep the log book and try and sell it later. I wouldn't trust a dealership to service a car they cut way to many corners find a good mechanic and stick with them!

  • For a 2007 I would say don't bother now unless the price is comparable to local mechanic.

  • Yea, I would say don't bother too. I recently sold my old 2002 car, most buyers didn't even ask for the log book, except for one guy who was a first time car buyer. I stopped going to the dealer when the dealer quoted me almost $400 to service my car because it is an older car.

  • It really depends on how long you are keeping the car

A franchise tech is trained to find as much wrong as possible with your car. He is also trained to the specific model thus haveing a better chance to notice things before they start to really cost you.

Aftermarket mechanics are not cheaper, they just do less!

"yeah, we had to recalibrate your windscreen wipers and your cleaning fluid was the wrong PH…..so parts and labour for that comes to $172"

you just need to find a decent mechanic.

It's 9 years old, there's no real need to dealership servicing. Even working at a dealership, I wouldn't recommend someone spent the extra money on the services on a >6yo car

    • this is the time your car really needs the franchise, using the wrong wiper blades and fluid can scratch the screen and stain the paint…

    • When the Kia dealer topped up the windscreen washer fluid on our Rio, they used something that was incompatible with the Supercheap fluid that I normally use. The front washers survived but it curdled in the long hose to the rear window and blocked it.
Had to take it back to the dealer for them to unblock it.
They probably blamed us for using non-factory-approved fluid.

Just few comments on the aftermarket mechanics.
I stopped using Automasters when they stiffed us with the "engine decarboniser" scam. They didn't ask if I wanted it, just stuck it in, and stuck it on the bill.
And I'm really annoyed with Kmart Tyre and Auto. When they do scheduled services, they basically just do oil and spark plugs, and they ignored the timing belt on my vehicle at the 40k service. And my type of engine will self destroy if the timing belt goes. If you book it in for a 40k logbook service, shouldn't you expect what it says in the logbook to be carried out?

And finally, unless you're getting mate's rates from the mechanic, why not do the servicing yourself? You'll save a bundle. (This is Ozbargain, remember).

        Use the most "compatible" one.
        Water!!! It works!!!

Checking timing belt @ 40k?! What car have you got?

        • arent timing belts normally like 100k 120k that sort of range?

        • @eglathangion:

          Yep! 90/100k

9 years old, not worth it unless your mechanic is crap (not saying all dealer mechanics are good either!) - some mechanics just do the basics, but won't tell you if something more major needs doing, etc.
But if you have a good mechanic who never over-fills the oil or anything, stick with them :)
