Quality Furniture and Whitegoods: Have You Owned Any?

Hi All

I'm looking to furnish a new home in Brisbane soon, and this post is motivated by two things
- there is so much out there! (a first world problem, i know)
- I've read heaps of bad reviews online about things that seem ok, but end up being rubbish further down the line.

I'm particularly looking for personal experience of people who have owned quality furniture and whitegoods that they would recommend.

On the flip side, bad experiences are welcome too so I can avoid these things haha

Off the top of my head I'm looking for

  • Fridge
  • Washing Machine
  • Dryer
  • 3 Seater and 2 Seater Couch
  • Dining Table and Chairs
  • Coffee table
  • Entertainment unit (a taller type to keep TV out of kids reach)
  • Storage shelves for kids stuff
  • Stove Top

Please include:
- price
- how long you've had it,
- where you got it,
- and why you like it

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

ok, as a father of 3 i'd suggest for going for "ok" stuff and upgrade to "quality" when the kids are older.

this applies mainly to couch, table and chairs, coffee table and possibly fridge.

I have a white fridge - the texta stains will never come out.
couch - has food, milk, vomit stains on it. not huge but I can see them if I look and they won't come out (green velvet couch - it was free) maybe leather is the way to go.
dining table and chairs and coffee table - kids are messy. and they like to colour in stuff or paint. they will get texta or crayon or paint on the table and chairs and coffee table. and don't get me started on when they want to glue stuff. glue is everywhere.

Go for some ikea stuff for the next 6 years, and then they will have gained fine motor skills and an understanding of where they can and can not draw on then they are less likely to inadvertently ruin the "quality" furniture you so painstakingly chose and paid for.

        • Haha I feel your pain brother. Thats good advice to think about

@iggs: leather is good for wiping stuff off and dark colours hide stains better.

But +1 for decent now, better later. We got a couple of fantastic furniture couches that are seem pretty good so far (12 months). Our reasonably expensive timber coffee table copped a real hiding from the kids when toddlers. One day I'll sand it back, but a laminate might have been a better option.

Try to get a washer with a quick wash cycle. It'll do for most wishing and with kids you will find it is handy to be able to knock out an extra load or two in the mornings.
