Things to do in Melbourne in August

Hi guys and gals

Perthite here, travelling to Melbourne from the 7th til the 17th for work/training etc and will be staying on Lonsdale Street. The GF will be flying over to meet me there for the weekend (12th,13th and 14th)

The GF has managed to score us some nice box seats for the footy at the MCG (2.10pm 13th Aug) but would love to hear some suggestions on where to go / eat / drink and be merry while we are over there. Small/Niche Bars, microbreweries, A great place to get a steak, breakfast, shopping etc.

Doing some googling myself at the moment but would certainly dig any suggestions from those of you in the know.

I'm personally excited about buying a beer with a $10 note and getting back change.

Cheers for the help!

I look forward to when you check in to your return flight too. Only so much riff raff we can handle at any one time.

  • There's fireworks at the Docklands every Friday night of August at 7:30.

  • rice paper scissors, never disappoints

Hard Rock. Rock climbing inside a glass tower in the city

Going to the markets, off the top of my head there is Victoria markets in the city or caribean gardens to the south east.

What ever you do, first stop should be to pick up a beanie, gloves and scarf, or else prepare to put up with lots of bitching about how cold it is :P

Catch the free maroon city circle tram around city. Has a recorded commentary. Use it as hop on, to see the sites.

Get off at Parliament station at top of Collons St. Visit excellent old Treasury building museum and, if it's fine, walk across to Fitzroy Gardens.

Visit Captain Cooks cottage and its warm inside the Conservatory. You can also see the carved Fairy Tree and minature Tudor village before having a coffee and light meal in The Pavilion also in the Gardens. They make great pies and have varied menu. Cafe prices.

Fitzroy Gardens also are a favourite venue for bridal photos. You can watch the brides smile through their shivers.

There is free travel around central city area on all trams so no need to worry about a Myki card.

Just sit outside and enjoy the grey and the sleet.

  • Do you like whiskey and treat your girlfriend with some cocktails? You will fall in love with Whiskey and Alement on Russell street. Amazing little Melbourne institution.
