Advice on Buying People Mover For 3 Months

Hi there fellow OzBargainers,

I feel a bit awkward submitting this request for advice, but reading what have been put out here for discussion before, this may not be out of kilter.

I need some advice please.

We have a family gathering soon, well, actually family is visiting for an extended period of three months (2ppl visiting for that period) here in Sydney. Family residing here are two families (4ppl + 2ppl) living separately. Then for a period of two weeks during this time, another 2 ppl will be visiting. So, at the peak, there will be 10ppl all together.

My request for advice is around transport options. I'm considering getting a people mover (min 8 seats) for the period of three months, for the following reasons:

  • During the three months, the 2+2+4 set of people will travel together sight seeing or whatever. It would be great not to need to fumble about in two cars. I place great value on being together and sharing while driving around. This will happen mostly over weekends.
  • During the weekday periods of these three months, the packet will alternate between 2+2 and 2+4. So the benefit of having a people mover will for these periods apply mostly to the 2+4 group, again, avoiding to go around in two cars when travelling.
  • During the peak two weeks, when there'll be 2+2+4+2 (10ppl), there is only one occasion where all 10 would need to travel together, and for that, if needed, a second car is the obvious solution.

Rental is not an option, as it is too expensive. My guestimate is that my loss of buying and reselling would be much less than renting for the full period.

So, what I consider my options to be is the following:

  • Get a 'cheap' people mover from gumtree for less than $5k, use it for three months, and then resell for as close as possible to the initial buying price. This is ambitious, as a $ loss is to be expected, but should be minimised. I can do this without financing.
  • Get a non-cheap people mover (say in the order of $10k or thereabouts) from a dealer or similar, with financing, an then do the same, reselling with the aim of minimising the $ loss.
  • Forget about it and just go around in different cars the whole time.

I've seen many wise and to the extent of 'expert' advice around here, and was hoping for the same.

Can you suggest additional options?
Could you suggest avenues to pursue with regards to 'cheap' people movers?
Are the clever ways to go about the financing of a vehicle for three months?

Much obliged

If you are looking at buying, plan to keep it. By the time you pay for stamp duty, insurance etc you would probably be better off renting.

Once you've got it then your 4+2 local families can still use it for one car trips.

  • Gumtree is the answer. I would suggest a Nissan Elgrande eg. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/melbourne-cbd/cars-vans-utes/…

A nice Japanese 8 seater car that is comfortable, spacious and reliable. It can be bought for around 5-7k which you can then sell again. If you have good sales skills you may even profit.

    • Good vans, but being imports you need to ensure you're getting a good one and not a rusted one. Same as any used car purchase really, have a good inspection of it

2nd option would be a decent condition Tarago. You'll always have people beating your door down for a used Tarago (when you go to sell it later on).

  • Buying and selling is a gamble, you might get lucky and make money, or buy something and be up for a huge repair bill, especially at the bottom end… Remember there is a reason the car is for sale, and it may not be the one the seller tells you.

And don't expect to get a great sale price if you have too sell quickly. Took me 3 months to sell my last car to get a good price, got lots of low offers before finally getting a good one.

Option 3 sounds the most sensible. Borrow or rent an extra car when needed.

More flexibility too if you don't all want to go to the same place at the same time.

  • Had the same problem 3 months ago. Option 3 worked well

  • thanks for your comments so far, it's apprecaited

  • Has anyone have experience with the toyota tarago, and have a possible idea about their resell values? And short term insurance options?
