Mountain Bike Wheels, Tubes and Tyres

Hi, I'm looking for a set of cheap Wheels + Tubes + Tyres for my 15 year old mountain bike. I've just recently decided to resurrect my old (cheap/sub $300) Mountain Bike that has been sitting under a plastic cover in the back yard for 3-4 years. The frame seems to be fine, but the Wheels are rusty and the tyres desperately require changing as they are deflated and cracked.

I'm not a bike enthusiast by any means, I just need the bike to get me to and from work (or train station). This bike I have is nothing fancy, it's just a cheap mountain bike. As such, I don't need any fancy new wheels that cost thousands of dollars.. I just need some cheap replacements parts..

I've checked numerous websites and posts from OzBargain, but they all seem to be for enthusiasts and are quite expensive.

I'm not looking to spend a great deal, just want to get the bike up and running!

Does anyone know where I can find a set of cheap wheels + tubes + tyres, preferably around $50-80 (secondhand is fine. I'm in Melbourne)… Any more than that I can probably buy a brand new el-cheapo bike from K-mart or something…

I'm not sure what size the rim is, but the markings on the tires are 26"x1.90". I assume it is a standard 50-559 tyre.

Thanks.

  • get double walled tubes. Less likely to get a puncture. Will set you back around 10-12 for one tube. Much less likely to get a puncture.

Pull out the inner tube, and the inches will be displayed on the side. 26" is pretty standard for a large bike

As for wheels, i think maxxis was a good brand.

    Sorry, dont know much else.

    • Thanks Davo.

I'll have a look around.. see what I can find.

  • have you got a good lock? Dont use those "flexy" style masterlocks you can get from coles/woolies/bigw etc, they can be broken with just some muscle.

Also, while you're at a bike shop, see if you can get some chain lube that lubricates and cleans. I flipped my bike over, dripped it over the chain, then hand pedalled the bike through an old cloth and all the gunge and crap on the chain came off. Bike runs so much easier
