GPS on Mobile Is for Free or Not?

I wonder about this for long
and got no idea about it.

I use Nokia 6210 from Vodafone.

Can I use it for free & how?

Thanks

  • 6210 - 6 Months free navigation software.

GPS is free with A-GPS turned off.

If you have A-GPS turned on you will have to pay data chargers for a satellite lock.

I think it's in settings-connectivity to turn A-GPS on or off.

Sorry, Just checked on my N95 8GB.

On mine to turn A-GPS off you go to

Menu-Tools-Settings-General-Positioning-Positioning methods-Untick Assisted GPS-Make sure Integrated GPS and Network based is on, turn off bluetooth GPS.

With that it's free, you don't have to pay data chargers it just takes longer to find a satellite.

I use Garmin XT on my Nokia, I haven't tried Nokia's GPS though.

  • Ovi Maps is not yet free on the 6210… and it may never be.

  • Use Garmin mobile XT on your nokia, better than phone software

  • Garmin Mobile XT is not free though. Nokia has just made Ovi Map free on my phone (E71). Pretty bad GPS navigation software, but works most of the time (and free with the phone).

As scubacoles has said, I don't think Nokia is intending to backport the new Ovi Map to any of the older mobile anymore, so it will never be free on 6210.

  • Used ovi gps for the first time today in a real life situation ie not at home in the backyard and it was great using satellites only. I have the 5800

I have turned off A gps so not getting any data charges (prepaid no credit) and it doesnt take that long to find satellites comparable to my real gps tiny screen but very handy especially when walking

as maybeamacy says just turn of A GPS and its all good
