Hi all,

I've had quite a few PMs/emails/comments asking for another deal on these so I've been able to get a new coupon for $16.99 for Home Theatre Life readers and shared here. You can check out the comments on the previous deal here.

Though there's plenty of other solid VR headsets around, the Virtoba X5 Elite offers a massive 120 FOV which means the image "wraps" around you, rather than looking like a small box in front of you. It's a great experience.

All the rest of the features you come to expect are here too, with adjustable head straps, myopic and PD adjustment and integrated smartphone holder (4-6 inch screen size supported)

I've been able to secure an exclusive code for Home Theatre Life Readers which brings it down to $16.99 so figured I'd share again!

Don't forget the 3.2% cashback via CashRewards too!

If you want the version with headphones, use code ZDFWSHZE to get it for $25 USD too.

I've been told there's 300 units available at the warehouse so there shouldn't be any stock issues.

If you want more details/pictures, read my detailed review over at my site, Home Theatre Life

  • Thanks Darkscythe. I've wanted a VR headset for some time and this is at the price to try it out.

    • Giving it a crack too. Cheap enough to try it out :)

    • Glad it's helpful!

  • Can you use these to just hold an iPhone 6s Plus against your face so you can do things like watch movies on a plane hands free or play games with a BT controller?

Was trying to think of other uses for something like that.

    • Yes, though it's better for watching 3D movies or playing Google Cardboard games. Using it for 2D movies is ok but you lose half the resolution due to how Google Cardboard works.

      • but you lose half the resolution

High end Android phones have better screens and can do 720p 3D.

  • Just to clarify the various options

    There's a

    • Virtoba X5 Elite Immersive 3D VR Virtual Reality Headset IPD Focus Adjustable 120FOV Movie Video Game Headset for 4-6 Inches Smartphones
    • Virtoba X5 VR Virtual Reality Headset IPD Adjustable 120 Degrees FOV Immersive VR Virtual Reality Movie Video Game Headset for 4-6 Inch Smartphone
    • Virtoba X5 VR Box 3D VR Virtual Reality Headset 120 Degrees FOV Immersive 3D Movie Video Game Headset with Bluetooth Gamepad Headphone for 4-6 Inch Smartphone

Am I right in thinking #1 has no bluetooth, no audio, #2 has no bluetooth, audio, and #3 has bluetooth and audio?

And where do you go on the page to enter the code?

    • The Virtoba X5 has built-in headphones whilst the X5 Elite doesn't (so you can use your own). The last option is just bundled with a cheap controller for VR.

The code's entered on the Checkout page.

  • +1

Just be aware that Xiaomi's Daydream VR headset is being released Today, but not sure of the phone compatability.

    https://www.wareable.com/xiaomi/xiaomi-daydream-vr-headset-r…

I was going to jump at this deal but will wait till I see this release.

    Review of this unit:
    http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2016/05/review-bobovr-z4-be…

    • I'm keen to test out Xiaomi's VR headset and I should get my hands on one after its released.

I reviewed the BoboVR Z4 previously too but there's two versions - one with a foam section around the eyes and another with the nicer leather-like fabric. As far as I can tell from forums, etc there's no way to guarantee which one you'll get.

The Virtoba X5 has only ever come with the leather-like fabric so it solves this problem.

    • Ooooooh While my Redmi Note 3 Pro isn't Daydream ready, I'll be interested to see Xiaomi's headset. Thanks. Might hold off till I see it's details.

    • Thanks for the heads up! Ever since I got the Redmi Note 3, I've been smitten. I'll try anything Xiaomi now… just as long as it doesn't explode or something.

A phone exploding in my face is not something I'd want to experience.

  • Thanks OP, will give these a squiz. Bought one.

    • Glad it was helpful!

  • On the fence. Not so much interested in 3d viewing but how are these with 2d viewing?

    • They work but you lose half your phone's resolution in the process. That said, if you've got a 4K phone or you're happy to trade off holding the phone for reduced resolution, they work well.

      • Any suggestions for a decent 2D headset or am I not understanding how these things work exactly?

  • Thanks op. Bought one. Have tried to find a good one for my first vr. Can you let me know what apps must have to get this run and watch movie from NAs for example?

  • Darkscythe,
out of curiosity, have you checked the spec's you are quoting?
I hear Chinese FoV is like chinese lumens.

I just measured my Ritech 2, and found about 53 degrees horizontal on my big-arse 5.7" screen.
Would not want it any wider for watching movies.

120 degrees, even if diagonal, is a lot. And the wider the screen, the lower the resolution (pixels per degree).

    • The 120 FOV is quoted by the manufacturer but I can confirm that the FOV is far wider than the other VR headsets I've reviewed such as the Blitzwolf BW-VR1.

I tested the headset with my Samsung Galaxy S7 and found the headset great for both watching movies and playing Google Cardboard games. I use two different VR cinema apps that let me control the "distance" you sit at from the screen so I prefer the bigger FOV as it's more immersive.

      • OK, I'll give it a try. Thanks.

        • Let me know how you go

  • Code for the headphone version not working.

    • I just tried it then and it was ok. The code is only valid for the headset only, not the one with the Bluetooth controller.

  • Hey OP, i ordered one as part of one of the old deals, but haven't received it yet, are you able to do anything?

    Cheers

    • You'll have to contact Geekbuying or maybe their rep Clear will be able to assist

  • well, I just received mine, the Xiao mi max cant fit in, that's for sure, but it sort of works, way better than the 10 dollar ones…
however, I still feel dizzy coming out of it

  • who can suggest a good quality bluetooth controller? need to find one for my amazon fire tv…

    • For gaming or just navigating?

      • Gaming.

        • I'd check out the GameSir G3 or GameSir G4S. There's reviews on my site but these are the one's I personally use.

  • I have an HTC 820 and the phone's height is 6.21 inches but the diagonal is 5.5, when the device is marked as being for phones 4-6 inches, does it mean the height or the diagonal?

Would it fit an HTC 820?

  • just received mine an hour ago. Shipped by TNT.

Thanks again OP, now try to testing it on when i'm home.

  • Are there any bluetooth controllers for an iPhone? I'm keen to use this headset with an iPhone 6S Plus.

    • You'd probably need something that supports iCade or MFI but this does have a button that touches the screen for you too.

  • This coupon code still appears to be active (it just shows up as a USD 19.00 discount on a 35.99 item, which still brings it to 16.99).

  • My NOTE 4 camera is broken where can I find the software if I cant scan the QR code? Argh

  • cheers OP, was looking for one of these. splurged on the headphones version, an extra US$9 on what i read are a pretty good pair of cans sounds reasonable.

  • Got my headset, and the field of view is about 65 degrees wide.
It is noticably wider than my old headset, but looks nothing like a 120-degree "fish-eye" view. Not "immersive".
The focus and lens separation adjustment work well. No eyeglasses needed. Comfortable, easy to put the phone in. Nice control button.
Optics are basic, but I can't complain for $22.

It looks like Hollywood binoculars - circular view, mostly overlapping. I cannot see the full 5.7" screen, so a smaller phone would fit better. Maybe 5" would be ideal.

I would definitely call it a wide angle - it is as wide as a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera, though the corners are not visible.

How do you get 120 chinese degrees? I think each lens is about a 60-degree view, so add them up :-)
Has anyone been able to compare this to a Samsung VR headset?
