Fix iPhone 5 Display or Replace?

The earpiece on my wife's iPhone 5 stopped working and there was dust in the rear camera. I upgraded her phone and thought I would fix those two issues then use the iPhone myself (currently using a lumia 820 - wanting either ios or android with a decent camera instead). I bought a replacement earpiece and I opened up the phone and replaced it. I also used a small air pump to blow the dust out of the camera. Unfortunately, when I tried to turn the phone on again the display was broken. It does light up but there are just vertical lines of light going down the screen. I think I put too much pressure on the display when I was trying to re-assemble it. Now I am left with the options of trying to replace the screen myself (knowing that the last attempt didn't go well!), taking it to someone to get it fixed, or buying a new phone. I have been quoted $120 to have the screen replaced at one of those little stalls in the mall. Any thoughts?

  • With the iphone 5 it's probably better to buy the screen and replace it yourself. The glass+panel is only ~$20, save that $100.

    • Yep, aliexpress. <US$20 delivered. It's a 5 minute swap. Check ifixit for a guide.
